Just got in the trusty W210 320CDI and within 100 yards there was loud bang/pop followed by the a short 'whoosh' like air escaping. Oh dear, what this time?

Engine kept running but with no power - it will rev normally at idle but load the engine and acceleration is either stuttering on part throttle, or very loud but subdued on full throttle. I've got it home, but lost as to what it was. Could it be turbo failure or something similar?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sean

DIY fix or requiring specialist help/tools?

Not sure where to look. If I can work out how to post a video you can get an idea of the noise it's making

I wouldn't turn the engine back on to hear the noise/record a vid, I'd get it plugged into star or looked at properly

I'd already filmed it originally. Leaving well alone now until I can get a trusted mech to look at it.

Just have a poke around all that big fat rubber piping on the left hand side. You can see below the airbox where it attaches to various bits including the turbo charger. Easy to see if anything has come adrift.

This seems to be the problem - pipe pointing downwards seems to have lost its connection

I cannot see where the pipe that was connected to it has gone - it can't be accessed from above so needs to be on a ramp

Looks like you've found it. I'm guessing that if the pipe pipe has come adrift from its other end too then it is either lodged in the undertray somewhere or lying in the road.

Now to find an indie in London who's open.

same thing happened to my mr2 turbo turned out a turbo pipe popped off. worst case could be turbo but that will most probably be last time to check

look for cracks in metal and rubber boost pipes (have seen both split before causing a loud whooshing noise)

look to see if any pipes are off it quite hard to tell in photos best way is to start on the airbox (even thought this is not a boost pipe) and start following it until you get to throttle body

im 90% sure it will be a easy and DIY fix

EDIT JUST SEEN YOUR PHOTO

cant you get in from underneath ? maybe the pipe is sitting in the engine tray ! glad its somthing simple

Take the air box out, much easier access then.
Easy diy fix.
I've likely got a spare part if you need one.

Check that the plastic hosing isnt cracked. I have seen this before.

When are you guys back Olly?

Will do - everyone I've called locally in SW London so far is closed till new year - Redfearn, James Leigh, German Motor, AMC.
