Hi

My brother is looking at buying a Porsche 911 and we are looking for a good forum?

Ideally one that is as helpful as this one, but that is going to be a tall order, as this is quite simply the most helpful and friendly forum that I have ever used.

Regards

Tan

WHY ? Cant you point out the error of his ways !

I think it is always worth asking questions on these forums too though as we are all car enthusiasts at heart and most have had a variety of cars in our time. We had a 996 C4 new from 2000 till 2006 for example.

Apart from PCGB, there is TIPEC.net and I believe there are a number of dedicated 911 websites - you'll probably find reference to them on PCGB and TIPEC.

Another thing your brother could do is to find out from PCGB when and where his local region have their monthly meeting and go along as a guest - they will welcome a potential new member / owner and be very helpful.

Do a lot of research before viewing / buying a 911!!

They're amazing cars if you're careful!

I have a 911 Supersport Cabriolet - the Turbo bodied one with the uprated suspension, brakes etc. 3.2 aircooled and it's just such a different car from everything else. I mean, it goes sideways in the wet if you sneeze, you're permanently deaf from the psycho-sewing machine noise from the engine at the back and the switches/controls are placed pretty much at random around the car, mostly out of reach.

But, it's still incredibly fast (sub 6secs to 60), eats Audi TT 3.2 Quattro's for breakfast, handles extremely well if you know what you are doing, is built with typical German engineering excellence and won't depreciate much. Mine is owned since new, has only 20,000 miles or so on the clock and I would never want to part with it :)

He has had Mercedes for years and currently has a fully loaded C320 sports coupe, but has always wanted a 911.

He is looking at a 997 Carerra 2 at a Porsche main dealer. Anything that he should look out for?

As Clarkson once said "Its sitting in your garage secretly planning how its going to kill you"

If he is buying from a main dealer with a warranty should be no problem. Check all the warning light illuminate on switch on and extinguish on engine start. Check the spec against the VIL plate under the bonnet which gives VIN colour code and options. Check the nose/spoiler and headlights for stone damage and under the bonnet for frontal damage. Tyres should be pristine with even wear across the tread. Check those wide wheels which are prone to kerb damage. Make sure the clutch operates silently and doesn't judder suggesting pending replacement --- there's alot of power to transmit!! Bodywork again should be pristine and free from envy scratches and car park dings. The final and very important thing is to check the oil condition. View any foaming or creaming with suspicion-- could just be cold running but these engines can have head gasket/liner problems--admittedly not so common on the 997 as the 996

Then------

PAPERWORK should all be present with a fully documented service history. Outside the dealer network check the car is not an import--again not so common now. The VIL plate should detail the supplying dealer.

just to show what a small world it is Portiacraft have some of the sales fleet serviced at my friends garage. so they might have a few reciepts from JAZ in the history ...

Also 911 Virgin. 15 mins from m25 & m40 interchange / junction appointment only viewings. they have some very nice stock.

Grab a 911 & Porsche world or PCGB members mag Porsche Post.
Lots of companies with good rep behind them. 911 Porsche world is not the prettiest Porsche rag but imho it normally has the best copy.

Please bear in mind the oldest 997's is now getting on for 5/6 years old as with any car if it has not been looked after it will have suffered.

Pistonheads, Porsche Forum has lots of 911 enthusiasts

Porsche 911 997 C2 Tip 54 plate

I have a high spec 997 which I would be happy to sell at the right price. I bought it from Porsche main dealer last year.

If you want more details please email me on [email protected]

Thanks

Hmmm - I owned a Porsche 911 (993) RSR. Basically the old school air-cooled engine at full race tune with a stripped out interior, hard suspension and no gadgets (like heating!) wind down windows only and no carpet. Great fun for about 6 months until my back started to hurt on the commute from Cambridge to West London.....Luckily I had a company fuel card too!

Great cars, difficult to buy a bad one, I would be inclined to buy an "easier" one to live with though - 996 or 997 era with some gadgets and a FPSH.....don't buy anything with added gadgets!!!!! Nightmare expensive to resolve electrical issues.
