Dear All,

In my seemingly never ending quest for a good honest, value for money W208 Cabriolet, I am now researching my current target, and have found the following on the DVLA website.

Date of Liability 01 01 2008
Date of First Registration 02 05 2001
Year of Manufacture 2000
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3199CC
CO2 Emissions 262g/Km
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour SILVER
Vehicle Type Approval M1

So questions, the car is being advertised as a W plate 2000 car, but this information suggests that it should be on a 2001 Y plate. There is no suggestion of it being on a private plate.

Am I correct or is there another explanation?

It could be an import so has a registration referring to manufacture rather than first use in the UK.

Seeing the car tomorrow, and will seek explanations as well as the VIN. Thanks television, the VIN check is one of the first things I do, i have so far in my quest seen the VIN checker bring up the following Monaco, Barbados, Stuttgart, the Netherlands and of course Great Britain.

None of these cars though said that they were an import on the V5, and none of these cars had a discrepancy between date of first registration and manufacture.

Will report back further tomorrow

All, so here is the VIN info below:

According to the dealer it was a showroom car for a period of time and not registered, the W plate was the first on the car. He would expect it to be a Y plate, but customers can have their own plates put on directly if they wish apparently. I have done HPI and RAC checks, and all say the same thing, May 2001 registration with W plate.

It is not an import.

Anyway to cut a long story short, I am buying it from Mercedes (not Mercedes Direct), I loved the car, all the toys except comand. I was very happy with the price and the Merc One year warranty, with one year mobilo cover, so I bought it.

I pick it up in 2 weeks, and finally I am a mercedes owner again.

PS anybody know what code 884 is on a W208 convertible?

884 is an additional locks on the boot lid to make it more secure. Some people who carry expensive jewlery and/or other interesting stuff specify it when ordering new.

Its a pretty rare option.

Just a quick update on this, perhaps for interest or further discussion.

The car was supplied by MB UK LTD, Piccadilly Showroom, Diplomatic and Tourist Sales. ( I am pretty sure they are no longer there)

So my assumption is that this was bought by a diplomat/diplomats family. Diplomatic plates are effectively exempt from registration, hence the year discrepancy, when the car was sold and registered.

Might also explain option code 884 above, for all the important papers etc.

I thought they just left those on the back seat..

One of my staff had an E class with additional locks. It's the only one I've ever seen with it.

Unless the vehicle has been wrote-off, or it has gone outside the main dealer servicing umbrella, you should have Mobilo cover for thirty years from the date of first registration?

Sounds a very nice car, congratulations

Regards
John

I've got it on my car, and when you listen to it at the outside when locking it, it sounds a bit like Fort Knox closing :D.
