E53 Coupe
I am in discussion on the potential purchase of a MB Approved 2019 E53 Coupe that the dealer has fitted 2Nr new front tyres to.
The Dealer has used Matador 245/35/20/Y - XL tyres that fall into the "Economy" bracket and not OEM Mercedes approved tyres.
Should the Dealer be using Economy tyres on an high performance approved used car? The tyres are obviously legal tread depth wise but I have my concerns if they are suitable or ditch finders

2019? plenty available from real MB dealers with fsh and min 1 year MB warranty - my pennyworth - Don't go to any other so called mb car dealers - any new tyres fitted should meet MB specs - if not check with MB themselves or walk away - plenty more E classes about -

Thanks. The E53 is being sold by a "proper" MB dealership in SE England with a 2 year approved warranty ....... may need toname and shame in due course

In trying to find background info on this concern in order to challenge the dealership I see from the MB Approved Used Programme publicity .......

"The benefits of a Mercedes-Benz Approved Used vehicle.
Comprehensive multi-point checks
Every Approved Used vehicle has been meticulously checked inside and out, under the bonnet and on the road by a specialist Mercedes-Benz
technician. This is your guarantee that everything is in perfect working order and meets Mercedes-Benz standard"

I'm left wondering how Economy Tyres MEET MB standard?

I would imagine that Mercedes spec is the size and speed rating in which case the tyres supplied are to spec, doesn't mean you have to like it though.

The tyres on mine are Yokohama Advan. I had to have my front tyres replaced at quite a low mileage. These were the original fitted from new and are MO.

Thanks for that info. I have identified that the OEM tyres are Yokohama which are still on the rear of the potential purchase

I wouldn't be too thrilled to see economy tyres on a performance Mercedes.
But as mentioned, if they have enough tread, meet the speed rating and the technical specs then they are suitable for the car.
I wouldn't walk away if its good in every other respect. You could ask for matching tyres to be fitted but be prepared for a knock back.

If its the right car at the right price then don't worry, your tyres won't last that long anyway, and next year you can put on what you want.

They may be budget tyres but as long as they’re legal - which they should be if they’re brand new - and are the right size and load rating, then they will meet Mercedes standards for an approved used car.

You may not be keen on Matador or any other budget tyres, and fitting budget tyres doesn’t really set the right impression when buying almost new from a premium brand main dealer, but they haven’t done anything wrong.

The dealer is just trying to maximise their margin. They’re a business trying to make money and so fittting expensive tyres eats into their margin, and in most cases will be unnecessary and therefore a waste.

Why do I say unnecessary? Most people wouldn’t notice before buying, when buying, after buying or when driving. They’re MOT tester won’t mind either. Ao most of the time it pays off.

I would be looking closely at the car, preparation and service history - as well as any pre-delivery work they completed - to make sure that they didn’t cut any corners elsewhere. Again most would my notice.

If the car is otherwise the right car, as the dealer to fit matching tyres, or agree a price which fully or partly offsets the cost of you fitting matching tyres post-purchase. Then get on and enjoy your new car 👍🏻

I wouldn't walk away from the right car either just because of budgets.

As stated, once worn out you can replace and you have your perfect car.

I bought my E55K and it turned out to be a great and very reliable car for 5.5 years and that was fitted with ditch-finders.

Rather legal ditch-finders than bald / canvas-showing or dangerous.

So I wouldn't read too much into the tyres fitted.

My E55 was the most powerful car I've ever bought and it taught me a lot about how to get the power down in the wet in a 510BHP RWD car with it squirming around all the time.

An immensely entertaining challenge!

If the car ticks all the other purchasing boxes then i wouldn`t let it pass for the sake of two budget tyres , if it a concern of yours then for piece of mind replace them once you get the car.

If you are forking out £50k for a car then £400 for a set of front tyres aint going to break the bank , plus if the Matadors are reasonably new then stick them on Gumtree for £100 to recoupe some ££.

My Approved Used CLS came with "Evergreen" budgets on the front straight from the main dealer ,FWIW i never had an issue with them.

I wouldn't ealk away because two of the tyres are budget tyres fitted by the dealer prior to the sale.

I would, however, walk away, if the budget tyres were fitted by the previous owner for his own use.

I can't understand why the dealer has put part worns on? I wouldn't except that but on the other hand I wouldn't walk away my c63 was sold with 2 new Dunlop sportsmax on the rear MB PLYMOUTH

I read “used” to mean selected or fitted, rather than secondhand or pre-loved 😀

Your probably right but you never know these day's 😄

Has used Matador instead of OEM tyres would be my take.

As said, if they meet the load and speed ratings they are legal but to me I would wonder where else they have tried to save money? Why not use cheaper, non MB parts for example?

Was it definitely the dealer or the previous user? I say 'user' because a number of people returning cars at the end of a pcp use the cheapest replacements that they can get away with to comply with the Ts & CS.

I wouldn't want those tyres but they would meet MB's 'approved used' standard, as others have said. Do C53 use XL rated tyres, what's the normal load rating for them?
