Power Assisted Brakes Work Intermittently - W123 230ce

The power assisted brakes work normally most of the time. However occasionally they fail completely and the pedal sinks to the floor. There doesn't seem to be any consistency with the failure which is annoying. The vacuum pipe to the manifold is in good condition. Before I spend hours trying to trace the problem, has any one got any pointers, where I should look first?

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated! :)

Check the parking brake isn't binding causing an air lock in the pipes, after that fit a new master cylinder or seals if the old cylinder is good.

Master Cylinder...
Ive replaced them on my W123 and all of my W126's. One of those age related things that will need doing.

Reconditioned ones are cheap from Euro.. I used MB parts...
