I posed a question about the Powerplus cartridge in the alt.auto.mercedes newsgroup and the replies were unanimously derogitory about this product.
Powerplus is a cartridge containing a tin amalgam with a ferrite magnetic core which is fitted to the fuel line between tank and carb (in my case). A local Mercedes garage is suggesting it as a suitable way of allowing older Mercedes (I have a 1987 190 carb model) to run on unleaded fuel.
Does anybody have any first-hand experience of using this prouct over an extended period of time?
At the moment I add Superblend to unleaded fuel but I wouldn't mind finding an alternative to juggling with that little plastic bottle every time I need fuel!

Hi Apeman,

I used to run a 1986 190E and apart from a timing change to the ignition nothing else was done to the car and it ran fine on 95ron regular unleaded fuel. My father drives a 1987 W124 200 (i.e. carburettor NOT fuel injected) and he didn't have to do anything to the car at all, just ran it from day one on unleaded.

My guess is you won't have to do anything to run the car on unleaded, however, you could get this confirmed by your nearest stealership. It shouldn't cost to get technical questions answered by MB.

One word of warning tho'...running the older engines on unleaded will cause accelerated wear on the valves and valve guides. By the time I got rid of my 190E, the car smoked when cold and booted hard, otherwise the exhaust was clear, I was told this was an indication of valve/valve guide wear. Not harmful to the car but a bit of an eyesore for the first few minutes of driving.

Hope this helps,

S.

Hope this helps

I remember reading about a company that claimed it's product was good for old cars and to help the performance on newer cars <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh2.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> ,

It was a product that contained magnets that fitted around the fuel pipe, only problem was this company got fined for making unsubstained claims and not telling the whole truth <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/omg.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':eek:mg:'>.

Thanks for the replies.
I've found it quite hard to get a definitive response about running my car on unleaded. The local MB dealership said it was fine to go ahead but then an independent said it would cost me a valve every 18 months.
I'm probably a bit paranoid about this since I did have to have a valve replaced a couple of years ago.
I guess I'll just stick to the Superblend additive-it uses the same base metal as Shell as uses in their LRP and has the approval of veteran and vintage car owners having been tested extensively.
