Thanks to everyone who pointed out this old fart put this message in the wrong section ;) :

Hi guys,

My Son has asked me to flog his CLK55 for him (he doesn't live in the UK anymore and kept the car with me for safe keeping while he was away). Although I love to drive the car on it's weekly run, it is getting in the way in the garage and I think he also wants the money

He tried selling before but didn't have any serious offers.

What sort of price should we be looking to sell - we want to shift it, but we don't want to scare people away by making it cheap or conversely making it too expensive. Glass's suggests about £32k - but it was on for that last year and didn't sell - I was thinking more along the lines of marketing at £30k? We'll probably try Top Marques and Pistonheads - any other recommendations?

The car is 2003 (03), standard with COMAND (CD), keyless entry/start/stop, no TV. 4 new tyres and recently serviced. It also has full diamond brite protection in and out and it has 11 months of full-MB warranty left. It's done 34,000 miles

More importantly, does any one have a headlight wiper motor for a 1991 W124 300TD - thanks

I'd say £32k is still a fair price. A quick look on the Auto Trader website revealed a handful of CLK 55's of the same year and similar mileage for around that figure. However, as you suggest, you may want to price the car a grand or two lower to differentiate it from the crowd.

At the end of the day, the old adage holds true that something is only worth what somebody will pay. However, also bear in mind that something like the CLK 55 appeals to quite a limited and specialised market, so it may just take a little longer to sell. That doesn't necessarily mean the asking price is too high, it may just mean that the right person hasn't seen the ad yet.

Good luck with the sale!

Cheers,
Ian.

Cheers Ian,

My thoughts exactly....

Now to try and source the wiper motor for the headlight. :bannana:

To give you a bottom ball-park figure, have you considered what a dealer etc would pay for it (I know...) Just to give you something to work upwards from ;)

There's still a lot of people out there who are shy (and quite rightly so sometimes) of parting with £30K+ in a private sale for a car - a lot of people in fact. Hence the people who aren't buying from a dealer will generally be looking for more of a 'bargain'

Good luck with the sale :)

Will

glass's guide give the following values:

trade: £30800; retail £34800

Sunday Times has always been a good place for second-hand Mercs.

Quick Update

MB dealer comes tomorrow to pick up the CLK.

£28k - not bad really. Only depreciated £15k over 14months :bannana: Glad it wasn't my money! LOL.

Ouch!

Hassle free though I guess.

Sorry to hear about the depreciation, I agree with all that has been said, you were certainly NOT overpricing the car. I wonder if a link to a warranty might be a good idea when trying to sell expensive motors?

A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I could of held out for months waiting for £30k and the right buyer to come along.

The car did have a 12mth full MB warranty with it.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - I will never shop with MB again

Anyway no point in crying over spilt milk.

Thanks for everyone's comments :D

Car drove off into the sunset this afternoon :)

Appreciate everyone's comments on this thread - cheers for your help.

Whatever you do, dont check out what the dealer is advertising the car for.:(
I reckon they sometimes move the trade-ins around to avoid their customers from seeing the markup. £5,000, praps?

Not the easiest time to be selling 5 litre V8 petrol engines when the juice is nearing £5 a gallon! That's one reason for the high depreciation. I'm not sure it's fair blaming Mercedes; supply and demand could be the real culprit.

Luckily it isn't my car (belongs to my Son - who's now emigrated) so I will look it up and find out. I can then store that information for when he gets cocky at the next family get together! :D

I was speaking to my neighbour yesterday, as he also has a Merc. He was sying his boss is selling his ML, bought it a Year ago but it drinks petrol like it goes out of fashion and he does lots of mileage. Cost 1 year ago £42,000 trade in price £28,000. You can imadgine what his reply was **** !!!!
  :(

I'm not sure it's blame...I just think they made their money when we bought the car from them, if they want to buy it back then they should buy it back at trade prices, and then make money when they sell it on. So, rather than blame, I think it's just a bitter taste. When we want a new car for the future we will buy privately and avoid giving MB any of our money because we know they will just take the Michael.

I told the bloke my son wants a CLS63 when he comes back and will now source the car privately, so for the sake of £2k, they've lost a potential deal in the future. As a business man he has to weigh up whether we will make the CLS purchase and he took the risk that we were bluffing. He was wrong. Our money will go to someone else, my Son might even try another make.

Personally, I won't step foot in a MB dealership again unless they are giving away free cars :)

In the same breath, I love the cars, the quality and the people - I just think their customer service/satisfaction policy stinks.;) It's not personal and I don't have a chip on my shoulder - but I have the luxury of making choices and I've chosen not to give them any more of my money

Thats almost exactly the same as the CLK! Fun isn't it.

The trouble is, you think that the more you spend on a car the better the car is, but also the better the dealers would treat you. As they smile all the way to the bank. The trouble is that is not true, I defected from the BM brigade as I was sick of their attitude, but MB are no better, in fact worse as their cars have more fault issues. So has anybody any idea what Audi's dealers are like??? Or should we start a new thread?
