Prince Albert Road, London - Prius hit Police rider escorting Prince Harry

The reason I posted this was partially because it is very close to where I live - I normally drive through this road twice a day (though I did not go to the office yesterday).

On another note... why did the second rider remove the injured man's crash helmet before the ambulance arrived...? Surely they are trained not to do this?

Actually the rules of this has moved on I believe.

If you cannot see if they are breathing or not then you need to remove the crash helmet and try and resuscitate if necessary.

The thinking being that if they aren't breathing then they are going to die anyway, head injury or not.

With the bike weighing in at 270kg and the car 1500~kg, and the car was only doing jogging speed at the time of impact. The G-force is all on the bike. I don't see how the driver could have been seriously injured. Unless not wearing a seatbelt...

The bike was well embedded into the Prius wheel arch so the car driver could well have foot / leg injuries.

The fire brigade don't need much encouragement to chop a car roof off - I've seen Police officers comment that it's a battle to hold them back sometimes.

I think, in this case, that very high speed was not involved.

The usual drill is for the lead riders to 'catapult' from junction to junction, stopping the traffic while the cars went through and then catching and overtaking the convoy again.

Those bikes will easily be doing 70-80 on such moves.

They could be...but I really don't think the one in the video was anywhere near 70 let alone 80.

It's hard to tell and to be fair I'd have expected the bike to be more damaged if it was high speed although the way it hit the Prius and caught in the front suspension could have absorbed a lot of the impact.

Also he could have been doing 70 and knocked off 20mph as the car emerged. Being thrown 30 metres is about right for a 50MPH impact.
