Is it possible to remove it does anyone know? I don't particularly mind it on the side windows but having it on the back one restricts the view of people following - sometimes it's useful to be able to see through the car in front.

If it is factory supplied privacy glass, nothing can be done with the exception for changing over the actual glass for non privacy glass.

If it has had a privacy film applied, it is reversible/removable (would suggest that such work is carried out by a professional).

If it has become not aspirational, but achievable, for old Ladas in Russia, perhaps it's not all that desirable...

Had mine done a couple of weeks ago near Peterborough rear doors and rear window 5 pieces took an hour and a half I chose the dearer of the two £130.00 - £150.00 all computerised cut to size and obviously fitted to the inside. It reduces heat into the car when the sun is at it's peak.
Solar Window Tint can reduce heat build up in your vehicle by 61% keeping it much cooler in the hot summer days and also saves you money on fuel by cutting down on your air conditioning giving you more miles per gallon.

Give them a ring and ask if they know of any others that use the same system in your area.

My dealer, Audi, Jaguar and other dealers use them and double the cost at least. So that's about £200.00 plus for the driver to go there and wait that you would be paying for.

In theory yes, the film will come off, but the residue that it leaves behind will be very hard to clean without damaging the glass/other interior parts.

Everyone has different standards of course, but I for sure would not like to have tacky windows.

Be very careful removing the film from the rear screen, easy to damage the heater and aerial elements.

Reminds me of the other thread about what cars make people angry. Seems just the sight of a white car with privacy glass is enough to make some people's blood boil.

I actually didn't specify privacy glass on my S205 but the dealer added it by mistake. I didn't like it at first but have to admit it's really grown on me. It's not just a cosmetic improvement (and complements the pano roof) but helps keep the car cooler in hot weather and is also good for security when parking and leaving things in the boot. Sometimes I have boxes in the back of my car and can't close the retractable cover - someone curious would need to have a very good look in to see what's in there. Probably even shine a light in if its dark.

Each to their own. Wouldn't the world be boring if we all drove the same cars.

This seems a good idea, given the cost of MB headlamps; has anyone tried this and would they recommend it?

My Diamond White came with Privacy Glass, I like it. We saw a W205 in a dealers last year when I was looking at getting the new version and the misses commented on how it looked good on a white car. She wouldn't let me tint the RX8 windows.

One thing I have noticed is that the auto dimming mirrors don't work, as not enough light gets to the rear view mirror to set it off. So there's no point in having both options, which mine has.

I've just picked my new C220 Estate up in polar white, the glass has a slight tint to it, but i've seen a few estate and saloon cars with privacy glass, i think it looks much better, or should i leave it alone? if i go for it, would you recommend a local Mercedes dealer doing it?

Each to their own , and if you carry valuables in the back of your estate I kind of see the point - even if arguably it screams " I've got something to hide in here " to would be thieves .

I just think it looks so tacky , and turns the vehicle into a " Mafia staff car " .

I have no problem with the auto dimming mirrors working on mine, and I have the factory privacy glass too. Maybe there's a fault with your sensor?

As for the aesthetics, it's a personal thing. I've always liked tints and probably always will. I don't have any issue with vision at night or at any other time for that matter lol

The the OP, go for it, but remember, stay legal and don't pay the main dealers extortionate prices. Find a local specialist, as that's all the dealer will do, but they'll charge you more for the same job.

I always spec th privacy glass where I can, as it's much better than an aftermarket tint (imho), but others would disagree, as you can get very good aftermarket tints with added vehicle security, as some tints make it nigh on impossible to break the window to gain entry. This also doesn't affect safety in the event of an accident as the glass can be easily pushed through from the inside out, just not the outside in

If it's factory fit then it cannot be removed, you could change the rear screen I guess but no doubt it would be expensive.

A new rear screen for my wife's Aygo is £500 including fitment.

Had not thought about people behind wanting to see through but it's no different to following a van or commercial vehicle.

I've also never understood this, the cars behind shouldn't be reliant on seeing through the car in front, to see what is ahead. If a decent gap is left in between the vehicle in front, there should be no issue with observation OR emergency braking in the event of an unforeseen circumstance.

You must have a faulty sensor as my ML auto dimming mirror works with privacy glass.

Privacy glass is the automotive equivalent of Marmite!

I personally prefer tinted - not privacy glass - but unfortunately it's not possible to delete it on some cars now, and so the cars we've bought in the last few years have factory privacy glass (behind the B-pillar). Now I'm used to it, it's not so bad, but I t makes the cars without privacy glass feel so light and airy - I love the standard blue tinted glass in our W164 ML

One exception was an Audi A6 Avant (no longer with us). It was white, and IMHO in photos white A6 Avants really don't look look right without privacy glass, in fact they look wrong! Fortunately the model I bought had privacy glass as standard and couldn't be deleted. So, although I generally prefer to avoid privacy glass, I absolutely understand why the OP wants it on a white estate!

I've had many cars with 'Ugly Kid' windows and the only thing I found it was good for was keeping the dogs a little cooler in the back of estate cars. Whether it looks 'cooler' or not is always going to be a subjective opinion
My current black A6 Avant Ultra is slightly different again. It has tinted glass all around except the rear screen, which is 'Ugly dog' spec. Given 90% of sunlight on the dogs compartment comes via the rear screen it functions well for keeping the canines cool and is a useful anti dazzle feature at night
....but then I'm strictly function over form...

The trade has various names for common options - for example, a rear wash wipe is a bidet. Privacy glass is known as 'Ugly Kid Glass'.

I prefer a rear wash wipe to be called a rear wash wipe and privacy glass to be called privacy glass.That way even this old fuddy duddy knows what you are talking about.

Getting tint off.

The tinted film on the two front windows needed to come off as they both had deteriorated. The rest of my ML had factory installed Privacy glass so never a problem. To remove the tint i found the best way was with a single edged razor blade and WD40. Starting at the top edge i peeled the tint back with the blade and squirted a dash of WD40 between the tint and the glass and repeated this until i could pull the tint off in a oner. The glass then needs cleaning to get all the glue off i used Goo Off and the razor blade.

End result was two nice clear windows at the front and privacy glass at the back and the car looks great for it. The tint film had been put on by the previous owner who had done a great job but after a few years it does bubble/crack and start to peel off.
Time to de-tint each window and clean = 10 minutes.

Don't say it, more useless information from an old fuddy duddy, "I'll just get my coat".

Still getting used to the tints on my S210, smoked fronts and limo black on all the windows behind. Bought it like that, but not keen on the front tints.
