Ok so the car I recently purchased had a private plate on it. I have since purchased my own private registration. The V5 when I bought the car had the previous private reg on it. Im assuming this plate is now mine, what do I need to do in terms of selling this plate on? Do the DVLA send me any documentation to prove its mine?

You need to put it on a retention certificate. DVLA then send you a v5 with an age related number. Then you can apply to have your new number transferred to the vehicle.
Then you can sell the old private number off the retention certificate.

There is also a retention fee of £80 which you will need to pay upon applying for a retention certificate.

No you should of taken the old private plate off the car 1st as you didn't the plate now belongs to the car so when you remove your plate it will revert back to the plate you bought it with to retain that 1 you will then have to remove it and then the car will revert back to its original age related plate

As others have stated, there is a fee

Easy to read guide from the DVLA

He's already taken the plate off so it CANNOT be put on retention unless he removes his plate 1st so basically he'll have to pay 2 lots of £80 and wait for 2 more V5s unless its a decent plate its not worth the hassle 😉

Horse->stable door I think here

And there’s no guarantee that plate will go back on, it’s up to DVLA who actually own the numbers. They may issue the age related one.

No.....if you take a private plate off a car (and put it on another or retention) the car will revert to the original plate it was bought on...or if its always been on a private plate it will be allocated a normal age related plate.

He would not get it back even if he did. Once the new plate is on the old one is gone unless you put it on retention before putting the new one on.
Dont forget that no one owns any plate accept the DVLA.....you just pay for the right to use it... and even then they can remove that right for miss spacing etc...with no financial recompense for you no matter how expensive it was!....and then they can sell it to someone else. Exactly what happened to my w205 owning neighbour!

Mine went back onto the private plate what was on it when I bought it ( when i sold the car)

It's still on the RS 09 JEZ as far as I'm aware ( the plate I bought it with)

Sorry, I can’t follow what you’ve done here. Can you spell it out step by step? Something is missing.

I bought the car with the reg RS09JEZ (private plate) I then put my private plate onit (RS02PUB) when I sold it I took my plate off and it reverted back to the private plate Which was onit when I bought it

I assume this was all done through DVLA?

You have no entitlement to the number, it now ‘belongs’ to the new owner.

Yes all done through DVLA
I never said i have entitlement to the plate obviously its now the new owners
The discussion was that if you buy a car with a private plate and put your's on it you then lose the plate you bought it with all I was saying is (in my experience) when you remove your plate it will then revert back to the private plate which was on it when you bought it

The RS09JEZ was probably the first plate the car was born with, hence it was returned to that as the default first reg.

“Im assuming this plate is now mine, what do I need to do in terms of selling this plate on?”

Kind of suggests that you thought you had entitlement. No matter, I think we’ve established that you might, or might not, get the original registration back!
