Last night while driving home, my heater fan motor stopped, it then proceded to work intermittently for about 15 secs on and then about 2 mins off. Does anyone know how the speed control works on this unit and where it is located, the symptoms were like a control unit component over-heating and then cutting out and then back in agin as the component cooled down. This morning it seemed to work Ok on my 30 min drive apart from a couple of stoppages. Car is a 2001 E220 CDi with the normal two rotary heater controls

The control unit is screwed into the casing underneath the fan. The whole lot is under the passenger side dashboard.

It is likely your fan brushes are worn, it is a common complaint.

i had the same problem on my c 200 cdi got thr bushes from a washinhg machine repair man and mbz said new motor only option ummm ummm

It could also be the fan motor regulator unit bolted onto the side of the fan housing (it partially sits in the air flow chamber for cooling)

Mine went a year ago and costs £130 from M/B. This is also another common failure and is often accompanied by an annoying high pitched whistling sound coming from the unit, the pitch varying with different fan speeds.

This is what the thing looks like:

Hi

I am having problems with my heater fan, also on a 2001 cdi.

The fan started to make a loud rumbling noise, then that stops and instead I get a high pitched noise. The noise has alternated over the day. I am only using the fan in short bursts due to misting, and to see if the noise has gone.

The loud rumbling sounds as though something is in the fan housing and flapping at high speed the noise is being accentuated in the ducting. When you turn off the fan as it slows it ticks as if something is hitting the fan blades as it slows.

The high pitched noise sounds as though the fan blades have come free from the motor shaft and so the motor is spinning far too fast.

The fan still appears to be blowing out air.

Question...

It appears from above that the fan is under the passenger dashboard.
Is the picture above, from Shude what I will see when I remove the cover in the passenger footwell, or is that picture taken from under the bonnet?

When those two tork screws (circled) are removed does the whole fan assembly come out allowing me access to the housing for the fan blades, so that I can clear any objects / check for damage?

Thanks for your help.

All pics taken in the footwell, looking upwards at the underside of the dashboard

After the first two torx screws are removed the speed controller can be removed, there are 4 further torx screws holding the motor in. The motor is heavy and I would advise everyone to be VERY CAREFUL when removing the screws as depending on your position during this operation the motor could fall out and hit you in the face or elsewhere on the head.

You will also get loads of dust and stuff in your eyes!

I found a leaf inside the motor in my car!

Thanks Shude, and in particular for the excellent post you have pointed me to.

Hi there, I've recently had my heater fan motor fail on me intermittently. I've taken it apart and the brushes are worn down. With a temp fix using a few cable tiese and washers its working again, probably only for a few weeks.

Does anybody know if new brushes can be purchased or is it a case of buying a new motor?

If its buying a motor anyone have a part number or know where I can purchase it other than MB?

Thanks,
Thanh

I have bought a few things from this guy - he charges £10 next day delivery, ask for Richard

referring to the fan removal, as per "How to" orginal tread made by Shude, I well know how to perform the removal work on a W202, since I've done it, my question is, if someone know, if it's the same/similar procedure also for a W203.

I'm only wondering since actually it work well. Does someone if brushes worn is a common problem also on W203 serie?

thank so much
