Hello, am just about to get a new pair of sunglasses and due to having recently got a kayak am going to get them polarised.
Does anyone have any troubles with instruments/displays/windows in their cars with polarised glasses??
Have a w204 with comand.

Thanks, Bill

In the old days it was normal for Polariod sunglasses to reveal the stress patterns in toughened glass windscreens . I'm not sure whether the same is true with laminated windscreens on newer cars . There must be very few older cars still running around on original toughened glass windscreens since all replacement screens now have to be laminated .

Since I no longer have Polaroid sunglasses , I can't comment further , although I may have a circular polarizing filter in my photo kit ( haven't used it in a while ) so if I can find it I'll have a look .

With instruments etc it can only help by reducing reflections in the angled plastic that covers binnacles on more modern cars ( although this in itself is designed to avoid reflections .

I too have a W204, and have polarized Ray Bans.

I haven't noticed any problems in the car at all, the comand looks OK through them, so do the windows, looking at my iphone some of the colours appear to have a rainbow effect.

One thing I have noticed is that most Peugeot and Citroen windscreens appear to be pink tinted on oncoming cars, not sure why that would be?

I have a pair of oakley polarised lenses and they do very odd things to glass on all cars.

Most car windows look blotchy and lcd screens are difficult to read.

Aside from that though the glasses are awesome.

No problem with my Oakleys.

I have a couple of pairs, one for the S class the other for the Volvo. I don't experience any issues reading the LCD displays in either car. I also used a pair in my SL500 which had a light grey interior, the up side was the polarised glasses stopped the dash reflecting in the inside of the windscreen, a huge improvement. The only time I've had an issue was driving my M.I.L's Peugeot 1007 and it completely blacked out the centre display. If you tilt the glasses to 45, 90 or 135 degrees you will black out almost any LCD display as they all have a polarised layer.

I use a pair of old Polaroid sunglasses for driving, indeed car windscreens show the usual rainbow pattern when viewed from outside, but other than that there is no issue when driving - i.e. no problem at all with viewing the windscreen, instruments, COMAND, etc.

It all depends on the 'direction' of the polarised layers as said... recently replaced a becker 7920 with a 7950 in the w124 and while the later is perfectly legible through a pair of polarised oakleys the former appeared blank at normal viewing angles. The only other LCD display in the car is the outside temp which is fine, some other LCD displays go blurry similar to the effect of, say, pressing on a calculator display

The tempered glass thing is normal for polarised lenses... http://www.pilkington.com/resources/ats157quenchmarksinheattreatedglass20130114.pdf which also kinda explains why reflections off of any flavour glass can look weird through polarised lenses

Plus one on the oakleys.....stood putting diesel into wifeys car today, £30 she says as she trundles off to pay......moments I stood....moments working out how long you measure the pump delivering £30's worth......till I lifted my glasses to realise the lcd screen was in fact working.....:D

Thanks all, polarised it is then. I like the petrol station scenario. Are any traffic lights Lcd!

Yup! Had this exact problem myself, prescription Carl Zeiss lenses, couldn't see the pump readout! I've also had the issue with the screen on my tomtom, I sometimes have to tilt my head for an improved view. Very happy with them generally though.
