OK, I’m back. I used to inhabit these forums a few years ago, whilst the owner of a two-tone red 230CE I ran that car for almost 4 years before moving on to a Volvo V70R, then a nondescript Lexus …but I never stopped loving W124s and eventually got another C124. Picked up a 93 300CE at a classic auction late last year. Pics here.
Yeah, I bought it with my heart, not my head - and for a while thought I’d made a truly stupid decision. The main problem was atrocious condensation and general feeling of dampness, which turned out to be a badly-fitted leaky replacement rear windscreen. I removed the rear interior, dried it all out, put waterproof gaffer tape around the rear screen, and continued to drive the car whilst deciding what to do. And from the driver’s seat, no longer in “wet sponge” mode, things felt a lot better. The vehicle runs and drives just great, ticks over sweetly at 600RPM, pulls smoothly, and feels like a proper W124. The 6-cylinder lump makes it far more refined and grunty than my old 230 ...yup, I gotta keep this car for a couple of years.
Now with fresh MOT, I’ve lined up the local indie auto-glass specialist to reinstall the rear glass, and I will soon have a pretty nice classic Merc as my daily.
One remaining annoyance is the heater blower, which squeaks intermittently – I’ve searched here and note that it’s a reasonably easy swap-out – but there seem to be a =large number of variants of the W124 blower motor. Is there a way of identifying the correct part number without pulling the old one?
Thanks, Chris
