Hello All

Does anyone know what grease should be used on the propeller shaft spindles?

I asked the Mercedes dealer and they stated that they could not find the information anywhere and thought it was monolithic grease but did not sound 100% sure.

Looking at the Mb operating fluids website it seems to be the Long-term greases, Sheet 266.2, NLGI class 2.

Can anyone confirm?

Seems like I have asked a difficult question :).

Just a quick update, I called MB UK this morning and asked them the question... Guess what - they did not know either but have a raised a ticket for me and promised they will get back to me....

Look at the MB operating fluid sights, I now think it is probably 227.2 which is labelled as a drive shaft grease.

What is a propeller shaft spindle?

The ends of the prop shaft that are inserted into the torque converter and rear diff. The pic below is a drive shaft but it looks similar.

Apologies for the confusion guys. I should have posted the pic to start off with. The prop shaft on my car needs to be taken off to change the prop shaft mounting and bearing.

More likely he means the splines that are part of the centre bearing assembly where there is plunge motion from the rear suspension.

Part 185 below needs replacing and whilst that is being done may as well change the bearing (part 190).

You'll end up with something dosed with moly - that's how it works in carland.

Is 265 or 270 the coupling disc?

This is a check item on every B service for condition and play (or at least it should be; whether it's actually checked along with all the other checks that are basically a B service is anyone's guess, and the B service seems like a lot of good money for old rope to me but I digress). Whist it's all off, I'd suggest changing the coupler too.

Specification would appear to call for a Lithium based grease with a high MOLYBDENUM DISULPHIDE content. Type of long life grease found in cv joints and propshaft splines. According to bevo 261.0 this would be met by MB 266.2 NLGI GRADE 2
Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids: Grease
MB 266.2 - Long-life grease (NLGI grade 2, Specification 266.2) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids
Other moly greases are available

Thanks for the advice, May be able to remove the rear prop only and change the bearing. Will check how much the rear coupling is tomorrow.

thanks Grover, the choice seems to be between 266.2 and 267.2. Whatever MB has put on must be good stuff to last 16 years!

The prop shaft looks in pretty good condition for the age and abuse it gets:). Torn rubber:

This may help someone, the symptoms on my car were a flapping sound and vibration. It was quite difficult to troubleshoot as it sounded like the flapping noise was coming from the rear of the car originally.

All of the components under the car were checked (Drive shaft, suspension, engine/transmission mounts, rear sub frame, flex discs etc) but everything was fine.

Finally, all of the heat shields were removed and the car was driven on a ramp. This pinpointed the noise area.

Not 100% certain but this seems to be the culprit. Regardless the prop mount needs to be changed.

One symptom of a worn propshaft centre mount is what you described and is often worse on the over-run for ssomee reason when the rear diff/wheels are trying to drive the engine/gearbox rather than the normal state of affairs in a sort of torque reversal scenario.

Just had a check for my E350. Needs front and rear coupler. Both same part number, about £70 each. I would imagine similar across the Merc range.
