This and that.
OK, what with GTA IV being released next month, I need to get a PS3.

I heard that the 40Gb version is the only one 'offically' on sale in the UK now, and it's not backward-compatible with PS2 games, whereas the 60Gb version is.

Is that true? Is there anything else I shoudl be aware of?

TIA

PJ

It is true - however how much of a consequence it really is is open to debate.

The 40Gb model has a few other hardware differences - fewer USB ports and no memory card reader for example.

GranTurismo 5 Prologue pack is out for £300 - it's worth it just for that game alone - let alone GTA4.

Hey, look at that, you got thanked twice! :bannana:

So you think there's no reason not to buy the 40gig version?

Is that GT5 pack available everywhere, or specific outlets?

I didn't really enjoy GT4 to be honest; it was a bit too nerdy for me :o

Still, I'll happily have a go at GT5 with an open mind.

You can download a free demo of GT5 Prologue ... provided you've got a PS3.

The PS3 is a seriously good bit of kit, I've had mine since UK launch day. There are enough decent PS3 games around now that PS2 compatibility isn't a real problem. It didn't play all PS2 games anyway (originally hardly any, but a firmware upgrade improved things).

Burnout Paradise is a good fun driving game, btw. And for a launch game Motorstorm isn't too shabby!

I'm still looking forward to GT5 and GTA IV though!

I'm really torn between a PS3 and XBox360 Elite because I too want to play GTA IV. :)

Does the PS3 have a built in wireless card? I notice the wireless wotsit for the XBox is around £60 which seems a bit cheeky.

How well does the PS3 intergrate with your home network? Can you play music and videos held on PC network shares through the PS3?

Damn you got my hopes up there. To Google! But, from the website:

[Period of Availability]
From October 20th, 2007 (Saturday) to November 30th, 2007 (Friday)

Bugger.

Cheers,

Gaz

I suggest you get yourself to your Local CEX store.... The PS3s are used but come with a full 12 month G/tee... Just tell them what you are after, if they don't have it in store they can get it transferred from another store!

I have no financial interest in this company what so ever, Just know people in the Liverpool store and they helped me no problem...

I don't know what that is.
Ok mate, Sorry, I should have elaborated... CEX Stands for computer Exchange. It deals in used electronic equipment i.e. games consoles, DVDs, Games, Laptops (Computer parts) Mobile Phones... Anyway here is the ULR:http://www.cex.co.uk/Stores/index2.php?id=68. I have just been informed that Sony Europe has complained to Sony Japan about only getting the 40GB HDD non backward compatable console. But we are getting the Media edition which has a 120GB HDD and is said to be backwards compatable.
Hope this is of help... Any more questions just ask I'll be happy to try and help. The Coventry XL store is showing 1-3 in stock.

Regards

John

I'm new to the world of PS3, just got one a week ago. Yes it does have a built in wireless card and connects with my Windows Vista PC really well. It more or less set itself up, and I can view all photos and video and listen to all my music that I have in Media Player.

Don't know anything about the games you mention. I'm not really a gamer - however I downloaded the demo of Motor Storm from the PS3 Network and now I'm kind of hooked :) In fact today I bought the full version. Full price = £40, pre owned = £25, special offer = £15, traded in an old PS2 game so in the end only had to pay out £8 for it! :) :)

One thing you haven't mentioned..... It's the cheapest Blu-RAY on the market...;)

Oh yes, forgot about that! It really is an all round good bit of kit, even if you've no intention of playing games on it.

I had no intention of playing games but, er, I think I may have caught the bug:rolleyes: .

The lack of backwards compatability and such a small HDD on the PS3 do annoy me slightly, especially when I know there are 'better' versions available.

Does anyone have a finger on the pulse of the gaming industry enough to know if Sony are planning to revise their PS3 offering in the UK?

I've read that swapping the HDD is as straightforward as in a PC, and that Sony may release a (paid for) patch to enable backwards compatibility.

Yes, the media edition will have a 120gb HDD and will be backwards compatable... Plus they may be available in different colours... I will find out more for you and update the thread.:bannana:

I'm liking this thread :D. For my birthday I have two choices of present and they are either:

1. A Sony PS3 or,

2. A 2008/2009 season ticket for Bradford City's home games next year.

Decisions decisions eh?

So, I read the informed posts with great interest.

Portzy.

As already mentioned, yes it has WiFi (and Bluetooth) built in. Works extremely well, setting up media streaming (to play music / video / images off the PC's hard disk via a wireless router) is a doddle. I posted a thread on this a little while back.

And given that Blu-Ray is officially "the future", the fact the the PS3 is a very decent Blu-Ray player (whereas Xbox went with the now dead HD-DVD) is surely the clincher.
