Checking up on some immigration stuff I discovered this useful fact about the public *enquiry* offices on the Home Office website:

"The public enquiry offices do not handle enquiries, or give advice."

So why do they call them enquiry offices?

Maybe the make enqiuries into the public.

See how my suspicious mind thinks of the sinister meaning while yours assumes otherwise?

are they not in charge of public enquiries into accidents, **** ups and intrigues. ie "the public enquiry into the Clapham rail accident started today". perhaps they appoint independent adjudicators and experts when it gets technical.

just a thought and have no idea why they'd be on the immigration pages...

There are several regional offices in the UK to handle immigration matters.

They are called Public Enquiry Offices which implies said public can visit or make appointments to enquire about immigration matters.

Except that according to the Home Office website ... you can't.

It looks like their function is actually to take money off the poor punters who need their documents processed in a hurry (ie. quicker than several months).
