Was on my way to Tesco at around 10pm to get some petrol and the car washed (if it was open, which it turned out not to be) with three of my friends who had just come for the ride along. For a laugh, I decided to put the neons on just for the journey there and back, seeing as it was 5 minutes each way, and about halfway there I got an unmarked Honda R Type Saloon with flashing blue lights up behind me. Blumming wonderful. I got out and had a chat with them. They understood that I wasn't some reckless boy racer with no care for the law, and that I was an educated young guy who was just unlucky with getting caught, and I understood it was a stupid mistake having them on etc. etc. I bet they expected some young ruffian with a cap to step out, rather than a smart looking, well spoken Engineering student. :P One of them even said he was jealous of my car and that he wished he had a Mercedes! :o He was saying something about me driving a nice white car :) , and how some people would think that the underlighting could freak them out. Make them think I was the police or something...? I got off with a £30 fine, which I suppose isn't too bad for that type of obvious offense, but what really annoyed me is that they said it looked blue. They're white godammit!!
They did compliment it though, said it looked nice and that it's not like I was public enemy number one, but if they catch me again with them on, I'll be going to court. That won't be happening however... I knew I'd get caught one of these days. I just suppose I was lucky to get such a low fine, as opposed to £30 per bulb. He made the fine stick after I asked him if there was any chance he could overlook it. I guess he figured a teenager with a Merc could spare £30. I had a bit of a laugh with them, there wasn't any hostility. In fact, I felt more in control of things than the cop who was complimenting my car... Unprofessional??
So... A stupid mistake by me, but I learned my lesson. Undercover police are difficult to spot. ;) I'll just put them on while I'm driving around campus.

since when is a white light illegal? (excpet tot he rear, except fom the number plate light)??

Have a slightly yellowish one for the sides (they are marker lights occifer) and a redish one for the back....

but i think it looks pants - but hey, its not my car..

I have never heard of people getting fines for underlighting just simply turn it off. Even a friend who is in the police says the underlighting is a grey area and it is only cos they are usually Boy Racers why they get pulled in the hope of actually finding an offence.

He was commiting an offence he was caught " Driving a Mercedes whilst under the age of the charging officer";)

Lighting is a very complicated subject and if you are really curious then a good night time read is the non fiction novel Construction and Use Regulations ;) Available to order no doubt at Her Majestys Stationary Office.

Unmarked Police cars are crafty, sneeky little 'wot nots' that can be very usefully employed :)

Bummer about the fine but if you have removed the lights at least you do not have to inform the insurance company of the modification  ;)

Regards,
John

believe it or not - i have read it... Well the bike bits anyway.
