Just a moan and a heads up about the cost of a puncture repair

I had one repaired last year (about 18 months ago)at a local garage that has two other places, so not your Halfords etc
MY car has 20 inch tyres and it was 22 quid inc vat/everything.

Our son's suv developed a slow puncture last week when he was working away in Japan for a few days -
As
they live up the road our DiL pulled up on our drive - we could not see any obvious
signs of a puncture and valve was not leaking - so i pumped the tyre up to a bit over max.
and the car was a few days later showing under inflation. (we knew our DiL would just
be driving to schools and shops all within the mile via 30mph roads.

Our son return home early Saturday and planned to get it sorted today.
However, another trye got punctured in the other front tyre - all four tyres less than 3 months old
Goodyears Eagles I think - so cost a few quid

Good news, both tyres were thankfully repairable (the bolt like screw in one tyre, we thought may
not be repairable)

Got the tryes done a KwikFit - 30 quid a tyre = 60 quid

National tyres always did discount codes but not since taken over by Halfords - National Tyres used to open Sundays 10-4pm not no more.

Though we were lucky that new tyres were not needed, 60 quid is a lot. Thankfully, his car
carrys a full sized spare and that was put on by the breakdown people who were just going to
seal weld the tyre but our son rightly refused this as at times it can mess up the tyre ie
then not repairable.

No surprise really , tyre prices are through the roof so the price of a puncture is artificially raised as they know you will pay out rather than getting a new tyre. Some smaller (back street) tyre outlets will have been cheaper for the repair but would you trust them to with an expensive alloy.

Boys Ford Fiasco has 18`s and it is almost £200 for a decent tyre , nothing fancy , but for a Fiesta ??

Looking for a set of tyres for the Cayenne at the moment , £1k gets mid range Hankooks , £2k+ gets performance MP4S.

Crikey I had a set of 295/35Y21 MP4S fitted in February 2021 for an all inclusive price of £1019 (fitted by Kwik Fit on the drive).

That's £25+VAT per tyre, labour and materials, for half hour job start to finish? Includihg new valve (if no TPMS) and balancing? I remember the days when it was £5, then £10.... but still, the above does not sound too bad, really.

315 30 22`s MP4S are £480 a piece , P Zero PZ 4`s are £560.

Hankooks @ £240 a corner (supplied not fitted) will suffice thank you very much.

Going to get the original DC wheels powder coated so they can fit the new rubber to the wheels when they are at it.

Hankook Ventus is a good tyre grip and wear-wise, but we've found on the Leon that they do get quite noisy when about 2/3rds worn...and they tend to crack where tread meets sidewall.

Hankook Ventus

Thats the ones i was going for the V3`s , next step up the ladder is Continentals SC7`s which are about £25 extra per hoop so £100 + in total.

Maybe worth while looking into the Conties as with only covering around 3k miles PA i would probably never need to replace them in my ownership ??

Whilst I fix most punctures myself with the works equipment being ex trade....if I'm not around we pay a tenner ....cash ....to the boys in the tyre/service centre up the road. It's not what you know, it's..........!

But if I'm away from home I use a string type kit (always have a set in all my cars along with a small cheap 12v compressor). Takes minutes, no wheel need to come off the car. I use the permanent type.... so you don't need to get it done properly after. They last the life of the tyre. Only cuts and sidewall damage can't be fixed like that.

My local centre now charges £25 just to fit a tyre ,if you turn up with your own. Even to a tyreless rim !!

With no offers running, you can save £110 per tyre fitted via Costco. £25 off per tyre for 19" and above isn't unusual if you could risk waiting, but it's not Hankook prices.

Between £400 - £500 per tyre is too much for a daily that only does 6 miles per day around town , as is £80 - £100 per tyre is too cheap for a 2T SUV.

I am budgeting around £250 per corner which should get me the mid range Hankooks or SC 7`s when they are on offer.

I could probably see the winter out with the original P Zero`s so plenty of time to get them ordered when they pop up somewhere on a special offer.

My A220 came with Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2's on it from new.

At 5 years old and with circa 20k miles on them the fronts were nearly out, but the rears - while having a good tread depth - had severe age cracking where the tread met the sidewall. They were generally OK as a tyre, but I was never really comfortable with their performance in the wet as they were prone to feeling “on tip-toes” when I really thought they shouldn’t.

I replaced them with Conti Premium Contact 6's all round and the wet grip is transformed for the better, although the general ride quality is slightly harsher.

Seems that the "cracking" seems to be an issue with the Kooks as that is the second time it has been mentioned on this thread alone.

For the sake of the £100 extra it maybe an idea to just go for the Conties SC 7`s.

That's shocking for 2 years .

Agreed, £400-500 is quite a lot, which is why I linked to MPS4S at £370 when not on offer, but also mentioned the offer as it's worth remembering Costco often seem to have Michelin, then Goodyear tyres on this sort of offer almost alternately.

If you could wait and assuming Costco MPS4S appear on offer this would bring them to something like £345, just below the £350 you might be targeting (Edit: pending wider tyre industry price increases). Conties SC7 also always available if this doesn't happen in you required window👍
