Depends on the car.
There should be a little flap at the and of the selector gate that you can push down with a pen. This should release the lock.

On my W203 the flap can accessed through the cup-holder after removing the coin holder bit, and using a pen as mentioned above, but this changes from car to car. The owners manual will tell you exactly how it should be done on your car.
If unsure, try removing the gaiter and have a look around the base of the gear selector for the flap.
