In my quest to find the perfect Merc I have stumbled across a few nice S500 W220 examples on which the VIN decoder reveals the following option:
479 cylinder cut-out system (ZAS) (с 04.08.1997)
I googled for this and one site had a pretty good explanation that basically says that the engine switches off 4 of the 8 cylinders according to the current drive conditions and quotes beween 8% to 15% improved mpg. Now that doesn't sound like a huge improvement, does it? I mean, if half the engine is switched off I would expect at least a 30% or so improvement?
Not really a deal make-or-break for me, but I was just curious. Does anyone of you guys have this feature on his car? Have you noticed the any difference compared to a normal V8?
