Well last week was a milestone for me as I have taken advantage of the public sectors excellent pension (hey, I've been paying 12% of my salary for 30 yrs!) and have decided to have fun doing something I enjoy - specialising in developing people, and making a difference (through various coaching styles and people-skills training to management) as well as the more mundane management consultancy tasks. As you can imagine it feels soooooo good leaving the wonderful world of Command and Control targets etc behind :bannana:

Anyway, cutting to the quick, are travelling expenses included in charges for VAT or are they exempt? I know I know, I need an accountant before you say it but I need to know for a customer management database I am working on :p

Well, heres to my first million !!

Travel costs (rail tickets etc) are not subject to VAT. If you're charging £X per mile for travel then yes, it's VATable, but are you actually VAT registered? It's not required until your turnover reaches £50,000-odd.

Depends how you claim the travelling expences. For example, if you put in a bill to your client for £x pounds, expenses possibly including hotel and travelling, £y pounds, I think that VAT should be charged on the total of x + y. If, however, you are claiming expenses on a daily basis, and being reimbursed daily, I don't think VAT is levied. But best talk to an accountant:D
