Anybody offer any advice on this one?

The boy has managed to damage (a crack) his DVD/CD for Call of Duty 4. He can't afford to replace it (neither can we currently :o ) and I wondered what is the position re replacing the media? I understand he could download a version that will play on a "chipped" xbox 360, but he's quite particular and does not want to go down that route?

In the PC world I'd be able to sort as it is simply the media that is damaged - his right to own it is beyond question.

Anybody? It's his favourite (does not rate COD5 as better) and you know what it is like at 16!!!

I would imagine if he sent it back return post paid to the manufacturer, they would replace it free of charge.
After all, the cost of a CD is pennies.

Sorry, I don't know how to replace media (but I assume that there is procedure in place).

But THAT is why I don't support all those protections and DRM. Why one can't make legal copy? As a backup?
Well, it's so much easier when your console is chipped - but I do understand concerns.

Just my 2p

Cheers
Chris

Return the game to the retailer - they will return it on your behalf.

Whilst inconvenient, given the amount of piracy involved I have to support DRM etc. You would too if you spent 4 years making a game just to see your profits disappear because 25% of sales are lost through illegal copying.

Just tried to call them but constantly end up in "press 1 for.. " hell and than discovered they will not actually speak to anybody! A kind lady on reception eventually took pity on me and said try writing to [email protected]

Nothing ventured

I dont agree with DRM either it's too restrictive, there should be a way where you can create one back up copy for situations like this. In terms of losing 25% of your sales due to piracy you just factor this into the original selling price to make sure your profits are what you want and this is one of the reasons the games are so expensive in the first place.

It only like the Chinese coying our technology and showing blatant disregard for our patents, as can be seen everyday on Ebay, not a lot you can do about it have you ever tried suing anyone in China? Waste of time and only ends up with the lawyers getting rich.

Even Levi stores sometimes sell hooky Levi jeans now as the Chinese copies are indistingushable. Often made in same sweat shops...............
Pirate copy problems is not restricted to software or music. Its virtually everything.
If they can make money, then it will be copied.
Simple.

Thankfully you're not in marketing or the price of everything would be ridiculous ;). Games are priced the way they are because they cost a lot of money to make (are they really expensive?). Have a wild guess at a production budget, marketing costs and then units required to break even given the console manufacturer, retailer and distributer all take a cut.

being the resident expert on all things gaming (self proclaimed)

your buggerd

you broke it so tough luck as far as they are concerned

COD4 (xbox 360) is know to have circular grooves due to the 360 being a crap machine (but the worlds best for gaming)

im currently 600,000th in the world on cod 4 (out of about 8,000,000

and im now having trouble with my 2nd cod4 disc as they get grooved and die

no companies will just replace them ever

some might charge £5 to £10 but most dont bother

there is nothing you can do

XBOX know that its their machines that put the circular grooves in the discs and still refuse to replace or even fix the issue

watchdog recently did a thing on the 360 & cod 4 and even they got nowhere

in the usa they are doing a clas action v microsoft for the very same reasons

Thankfully you're not in marketing or the price of everything would be ridiculous ;)..

I actually used to be the Global Head of marketing for one of the worlds largest chemical companies :p

Although strictly speaking profitability and profit recovery is a Sales discipline not a Marketing one and that is why the prices of most things are rediculous;)

Unfortunately no CD manufacturer would replace the CD if damaged by the user. Anyway it is a very nice gesture from fellow mercedes enthusiast to give you the game. Nice to see , people like that exist. I wouldn't mind either but still playing both!

GFP what is your gamertag, maybe we can have a go on XBox live.

Steve, I have CoD4 and rarely play it now (I prefer CoD WaW funnily enough) - I'll post it to you gratis if you PM me your address?

Buy me a pint in Torquay?

This forum never ceases to amaze me!

Thanks mate - will PM address

The problem we have now is that Suzy Cute (his mum) pointed out you deserve a big kiss. But which one of us gives it?

:bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana:

Many thanks once again - Chris will be made up!
