Mercedes E240
Last week I part-exchanged my W126 300SE which I have had for ten years for a Mercedes E240 automatic. It has done 135K miles - is that OK?
I have the service history, but there are a few little niggles which an E240 owner may be able to help me with.
The original JVC radio has been exchanged for a Clarion, and the CD player does not work. On removing the radio to see if I could find out why the display is very faint (it still is, I cannot see what channel is on), I note that there is a USB lead in the radio bay - there is also one in the glove box (possibly the same one) - what is this for? There is also a blue covered cable encasing two phono socket leads - what is this for and where does the lead go?
The metal key in the fob is broken, I will have to get another from the dealers. I strongly suspect that the key may be broken off in a lock, but I will not know this for sure until I get a new key. Does the metal key only go in to the door lock, or are there other locks (the boot, the glove box) that it fits.
The boot does not lock via the central electronic locking - what should I look for?
Finally, when I first switch on the ignition I get a message saying "faulty display" and the picture of a lamp. Should the display be lit up, as it is very dark - where are the bulbs in the display?

Wonder if someone has swapped in a " cheapy " for the original radio- hence the spare leads. Emergency keys should unlock the car, boot and glovebox I think. The radio illumination might be linked to the display brightness- there's usually a "knob" to turn up the brightness. Best to post the exact age and model of your car. Many of these earlier cars had problems with the instrument cluster with dropped digits in the display etc. There are specialists who repair them.
