Hi,

I realise that vehicles this engine is fitted to, such as 2006 onwards E320 CDI, have computer calculated service intervals. However, if anyone has WIS, please can you let me know what the stated change interval for the 'Poly V-Belt' (serpentine belt at the front of the engine) is?

I realise that various services will require the dealer to inspect the belt for wear. However, do Mercedes actually specify a maximum life span for the item (e.g. 100,00 miles or 5 years)?

Also, I would be grateful to know whether MB has ever stated a maximum rated lifespan for the coolant? Again, I know that this is something the computer would normally advise on. However in the event that, say, the computer schedule became corrupted, is there an old-fashioned miles/age life span for the coolant?

Many thanks.

Personally I would check the belt for deterioration at the yearly service, it is usually obvious when they are getting ready to self destruct, you will see missing sections and cracks in the Vs. You do not have to remove the belt to do this just look at it where it back flexes around the pulleys. I have had this on a C220D which I bought as an approved used merc and could not believe it when I saw the belt some 2 months after while tinkering! The coolant changed is on time and from memory is 3 years but that assumes that you have no leaks and have had no top ups which would leave you not knowing what strength of antifreeze you have left in the system unless you buy the relevant kit.

All the service information should be in the service book, although it's hard to figure out!

If you put your car's details in here: Mercedes-Benz ESS it should tell you what needs to be done. Much depends on what has been done in the past (and whether you have that info - it should be ticked in the service book).

On my car coolant is every 15yrs.

I don't believe there is a service interval for the poly V belt, it is just inspected as part of the B service or major service and replaced when needed. They can do 100k+ miles without issue.

Coolant interval will depend on the year of your car. Some were 2-3 year intervals and some were for life and others I thinkg were 10 years. Your dealer should be able to clear it up if you give them your VIN.

Thanks to all who replied - I am grateful for your time. Particular thanks to Rory for the link to MB ESS.

There is no interval for the belt. Replace when starting to perish

Small threadlift.

How much should it cost to replace this on -06 c 320 cdi? Car is in for service, they recommend it changing and want 300 quid for the operation!

Thanks

Just had mine changed when i had the ATF done and he charged an extra £75 for the belt and labour.

This was at my MB trained specialist garage.

Wow.

I mean I know MB likes charging but this seems excessive even for them, could there be a reason they quoted me 300 quid? Are there additional parts that it's recommended you change at the same time?

Thanks

2 hrs labor is the answer.

There is actually a special tool to test poly v belts...

But basically any sign of cracking or perishing and just change.

i changed mine at 83k it was the original and the muilt ribs were cracking, car is 2003 s211 320 cdi

Mine is at around 80k as well.

Is this really a 2 hour job?
Might do it myself, or is it difficult doing it properly if you are not familiar with this?

Forgot to mention mine was at 96500 and probably original but the belt did look a bit cracked and bits missing from it.

I was out in the workshop watching someone that knows what they are doing and he had difficulties as on the C class 2006 the space is tight and have to remove the aircooler thingy the turbo air goes into on the front of the engine to get at the belt.

I have fingers like sausages...Lol, so the reason i didn`t go near it!

My man did it in about 1/2hr

Did mine in about 45mins but i did forget the route of the belt lol, space is very tight but i didnt have to remove anything (may have been easier if i had)

When I changed mine on my e280 / 642 I had to remove an air in take leading pipe to the turbo. A relative straight forward job that took less than 1 hour.
