Im trying to repalce the audio 10 cd in my 2000 CLK 230k but when i plug the wires into the aftermarket stereo it lights up for a second then turns off again, it can eject a cd etc but then turns off immediately and none of the buttons work, i have tried bypassing the autolead telemute interface box thingy that is in the loom but still the problem remains!

the new stereo works in my other car so its not that, anyone know what to do?

cheers

I think that for some reason the permanantly live feed (low power for memory settings) and the switched live feed is reversed (at least it was on my W124). What is happening is the low power permanent live is kick starting your headunit but doesnt provide enough power to keep it going.

I reversed the two again on the connector block on the stereo and everything worked just fine.

Best get your multimeter out and double check that this is the case on your clk before you try this I guess.

cheers for that mate i just checked and your right but there seems to be no red wire present at all, there is on the plug for the telemute thing which then runs to the stereo and off into the car, but the stock plugs connected to the telemute lack one!
i only have brown for the earth and a red/blue one where yellow should be!

taking a feed from the red/blue and running it to the hole for red makes the stereo work perfectly, however, it will not turn off when the key is removed.

any idea where i can find a wire to take a feed from that goes off with the key?

also should i bypass the telemute (just unplug it) or does it serve a purpose with all stereos?

there is no phone connected to the car.

thanks

Doesn't the can-bus power up the radio?

My CLK only had a permanent feed and ground.

The radio was powered on by the can-bus signal which carries ignition and illumination signals.

whats the can-bus look like is it behind the stereo?

the audio 10 seems to run fine with just one power wire but my new one doesnt?

Ah, sorry must re-read your post ( replace ) was the word I missed. Yes the audio 10 will be told by the can-bus to power up when the iginition comes on.

If you fit an after market HU, the you need a switched feed. I used the cigarette lighter +12V feed for that, just remove the ash tray assembly and tap off from that. You will see a nice thick wire going to the lighter.

Hope that helps

Craig

sure does mate cheers!

i take it removing the ashtray isnt a big deal?

No that big a deal, remove the gear lever surround, and the gears plate, you may have to take out the ashtray bits ( tray etc). undo the 2 screws for the ashtray and pull it out. You can unplug the wires to the lighter whilst you tap into the +12V.

Here's my ashtray and aftermarket HU....
