Hmmmmm....

At dads office, only he and one other person have keys ( 3 locks) and an alarm system ...

He comes in today and he has one of those phones that record the last numbers dialled , (Amstrad thing ) and it appears that at 12.56 am this morning, someone made a 25 second call to an 0800 number ......

He has asked the other keyholder if they were in the office last night and they weren't ......

A neighbour told dad that there were two men looking at the building at about half past twelve last night...

He has tried dialling the 0800 number , but no one answers..... we have an idea why this might be but want to check ....

Is there anyway of getting a company name from an 0800 number ?

thanks in advance

H

He doesnt have any equipment that automatically dials out? For exapmle our credit card machine dials an 088 number in the middle of the night for barclays, our MOT computer does the same along with many other things now i come to think of it...

Nothing on Google , nothing on B4U either .....

No, no equipment that dials out , thats why its a bit disturbing ....

If anyone can find anything the number is 0800 917 9441

It will be much appreciated ...

Is it an alarm system number?

No, alarm is not monitored, basically there is no reason for anyone or anything to have called this number at nearly 1 am ..... :(

which is why we are trying to find out what it is ...

very odd. hope it gets sorted soon enough.

possibly some sort of phone hacking? i.e. plugging in to your phone from an external site and using it to route calls through? you say its amstrad - is it the one with the email screen?

are u sure the date and time on this amstrad is set correct!! Sorry, its got to be something simple...
I cant see why/how someone would break into an office, have a chat to a free phone number, then leave without stealing anything or leaving any trace!

Agree with jay on this one.

Even if someone tapped into phone from outside, it would not show on the amstrad since it would have to be dialled on the amstrad and not on another handset.

I suppose that its not beyond the realms of possibilities to dial-up the amstrad and freak it somehow to dial back out. V. unlikely though.

Date and time is correct , phone call was 25 seconds ....

It had to be called from the actual phone , or as you say, it wouldn't have shown the number ...

do either of the keyholders drink? lol

Also when i did a search for 0800 917, the numbers were mostly medical related, i,e NHS, quit smoking helplines etc... dunno if that means anything?

I bet it's checking for emails, or looking for software upgrades. It probably does this on a regular basis (daily/weekly/whatever) - may be configurable.

Ghosts

I know our exchange talks to BT for faults/updates etc, I have no idea when or how.

If this is an exchange and the extension phone is the master I suspect BTB is spot on.

Assuming it's the e-mailer thing (do Amstrad make other phones?) I did a quick Google and found this review
Bought this phone yesterday and having read the terms and conditions I'll be returning it for a refund.

Basically you pay a (very cheap) price for the hardware and from the date of installation the phone will automatically make premium rate phone calls at regular intervals to pick up emails and download software updates (the default for this dialing feature is every day but can be extended to a minimum of once a week). Call me paranoid but this is like inviting a stranger into your home on a regular basis to make calls to a premium rate line for as long (or short) a time as they wish.

If there was an option to buy the phone outright and disable the automatic phone calls I might think about buying one again but until then I'd rather have full control over what's dialing out of my home, for what length of time, and at what cost.

Sounds about right?

Hmmmmm .....

Its quite old, it was one of the first Amstrad email phones (5 years +) ....

I'm sure we would have noticed it before ....

Just looked a bit deeper Amstrad do not do exchanges so is it one of the emailer phones? if so even more likely the btb.

edit: lol two posts that make a nonsense of my post lol
