Hi,

Is it possible to disassemble the power window, seat heating and hazard switches (mounted in the console) of an '86-89 SL for cleaning? I removed the switches from the console, but they seem to be completely sealed. Does anyone know how to open the switch and access the bulbs inside? (The hazy, dim lights are quite annoying, so if they can't be opened I will have to order new switches).

They don't have bulbs in them, they are lit by one bulb behind the dash and the switches are lit by fibre optic cables from that bulb.

The brightness is controlled by turning the trip reset knob

Hi Jaymanek, thank you for responding, that is news for me. Two questions - (1) where exactly is this bulb located? (2) the switches look filthy on the inside (trapped dust etc) when illuminated, any ideas on how these can be cleaned?

Ive just realised, the switches you mention are on the gear lever surround... these ones may well have bulbs in them.

To remove the switches, you need to get the panel off... I think there is a screw on the handbrake end, so remove the carpet and you will see it, then, im sure it just lifts up and back. Although there may be a fixing under the ashtray - its been a long time.
The ashtray console is easily removed by first removing the ashtray insert (as if to clean it) and then the surround is held in with screws.

The switches come out of the wood trim upwards, push them from underneath gently.

They do come apart but best to do this on a table with plenty of light... Various bits inside can go flying.

Thank you for the infor Jaymanek and mct_cars - the version of the switch in my car is different from the one on Northern Resource and although I have removed the switches from the console, I cannot seem to get inside them. I will give it one more try later this week, otherwise Druk that link will come in quite handy!
