Despite years of getting away with handing kids back to relatives, my time has come and a beautifull and loud little girl is being blessed to us.

As we live in a huge car park called London with its added problem of environ MENTAL ists, or tax collectors, my wife drives a fiat 500 for everyday use and we use our beloved 1999 SL500 at weekends.

Problem is, we know all baby travel systems will fit the fiat but which will also fit the Merc?

I have read about Merc's babysmart system but not sure it will work with my 1999 model. We would also love a base where you just click the body onto straight from the pram thing.

Do Mercedes do a travel system? will it fit? wil sleep from now on be a pure luxury?

All help gratefully received.

Best regards

Gary & Rachel

Congratulations to you both!!

Not aware of an MB travel system, but MB child seats are relatively expensive. We have two, and managed to negotiate a discount on both, so do haggle if you buy MB branded, and phone around - MB dealers in and around the big car park will be relatively more expensive than those out in the sticks.

Try Porsche too, as they have a range of child seats which are 911-compatible, eg a speciall push chair which will fit in the front 'boot' of a 911.

Check your handbook, it will cover baby seats etc. in the SL.

I think you will have a problem till your youngster can go in a forward-facing seat though.

Assuming you have rear seats, you'd then be able to put an adult in the back. But this would only work if the passenger airbag is deactivated (as you'll need to have the front seat forward a bit).

My older R129 just has a weight sensor in the passenger seat; yours may detect an M-B child seat and deactivate the airbag.

This is Junior BTB in the SL at 13 months:

Thanks for the replies, I'm having proper seatbelts fitted to the rear next week, fortunately my wife is little so won't have too much problem with her in the back.

looking for a merc baby seat now.

Cheers

^ Great for a short trip for you and him but any real distance with another adult, pram, change bag and all the other stuff you need.... I'm not so sure :)

I had a 330ci convertible when our first was due and the baby seat and wife crammed in the back... not good.

I cannot imagine how small an adult you need to be to fit in the back of the SL? even in the BM and front passenger seat pushed forward its cramped.

As a very tempory sollution poping to the shops for you and child then fair enough. Any distance / holiday....

ooh as for sleep, whats that :) ours are 5 and 16 months now so I've forgotten. Its something you catch up on at work isn't it?

I don't know if they fit the SL / fiat 500 but we use the maxi cosi base units that fix in place with seat belt and isofix. We have one in both cars and simply just click the baby seat into what ever car we use. no phaffing and very secure. The maxi cosi babt seat also fits most prams your likely to be looking at.

Congradualations by the way :)

The R129 actually has a pretty decent boot, but I agree it's not the most practical car for small kids :)

You can fit a normal-sized adult in the nearside rear seat - there's a huge amount of leg room in the front, so moving that seat forwards doesn't matter. It's another matter on the other side, I normally drive with the seat fully back in which case you'd be OK giving Douglas Bader a lift but otherwise ...

In fact for short trips it's OK with the driver's seat forward a bit, but only enough for a kid in the back on that side.
