My new ATE brake pads for rear brakes came without the silver (after cleaning) sheet. Is this necessary. It is less than 1mm thick.

Old brake pad with sheet and new ate one without 708CD303-16ED-4696-A97A-1574B5C394DC.jpeg

It's an anti-squeal shim.
I've never known new pads (front or rear) to be supplied with the shims. I've always cleaned the old ones & re-used them.
I guess technically it's not needed, at the risk of noisy brakes, but personally I'd fit it. It's not as if it makes the job more difficult.
Ian.

ok, thank you, I cleaned them up and they looked brand new again (apart from the indents of the pistons and brake pads) and put them on the NSR brakes today and then I went and took the OSR side wheel off and added the shims in as well. Feels better to have done it properly

I would use the old shim again that was removed , the reason that it was in there is to stop brake pad noise
