R129 - Buying Advice

Guys,

I'm thinking of buying a R129, ideally an SL500. I'm only looking to spend 5-6k max on an early 90's car. There seem to be a few on Autotrader and car and classics at this price. However does anyone have any car dealers they could recommend?

Or if any of you guys are selling one give me a shout.

Any specialist car dealers will be asking a lot more than 6K so you will need to search normal traders or privately.

Its lashing down and gail force winds in Scotland!!

...I know what you meant though but I quite fancy doing a european tour in one for a couple of weeks this year.

No rot to worry about generally, check that everything works properly especially the roof mechanism. Don't worry if it makes quite loud clicking noises when its operating. The 500 engine is bullet proof but check the gearbox to make sure it changes smoothly.

Under the bonnet you may find the hood pad is disintergrating, very common and costs about £75 to buy from MB. Fairly easy to fit but its a two man job.

If by chance it has adaptive damping (ADS) this can cost serious money to rectifiy if not working correctly. Not many 500's had it as it was an option, standard on the 600.

Lovely cars by the way, I should know!

Check all the electrics ... seat adjustment etc. Also the roll bar - you can raise and lower this manually via a switch on the console.
