Having recently been on holiday, the last time I parked up my car I unfortunately left the parking lights on (the light switch is unlike any other ive ever used) The result was a very dead battery.

Now I hate Jumpstarting cars, its not ideal and really doesnt do any favours, BUT she was parked up down the side of my grandparents house while I was away, I couldnt shift her out of park even with the ignition on and we had no cable long enough to get to the battery with a charger.

So, reluctantly, I Jumped her with our landrover and got her going again, all fine, roof up and down ok, windows fine, lights, headlights, the lot. left her running for about an 20 minutes or so and then took the old girl for a good 30 mile blast.

Firstly I noticed on the way into town that when I indicated right, the dashboard lit up with warning lights that went accross panel like a wave from left to right but thought nothing more of it. It has happened before however so im note massively bothered about it, it seems to have no effect other than making me rather uneasy as it were.

Back to the story, I drove out the other side of town and I noticed that my right hand indicators (front, side and back) were solidly lit and on, not flashing but just on.

I tried indicating right and that had no effect. Then for the rest of the drive home, they randomly came on, solidly and off at different intervals. If im honest I really dont know if this has happened before, beause its been well over a months ince I last drove her and the only reason I know this time was beacause I was driving her in the dark

Parked it up when I got back, turned the lights off and found that the parking lights were still illuminated as well as the right hand indicators, turned the lights on again and off, and they went off.

I then went out to the pub, returned 4 hours later - turned her over and she was really struggling but coughed into life. Just came back to her now about 18 hours later and she turned once and died. I had to jump start her again

She also occasionally cuts out for no reason at all and will refuse to restart for 5 minutes or so. She's not overheating or doing anything odd, just the engine cuts out. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may be the fuel pump relays or something similar, she had been with a specialist car dealer for 18mths/2years prior to my purchase of her, possibility?

She's only done 55k miles Full Mercedes service history from new.

Battery is new, ive checked all of the fuses that I can find. There are no odd noises or sounds from the car at all, the engine runs nice and smooth once she's running.

My only thought is either a fault somewhere in the indicator stalk, or a relay fault somewhere?

She ran well and solidly when I drove her the other day I Just cant work out

    A) if the battery drain is due to the electrical faults ive described above
    B) If the battery just isnt charging due to a fubarred alternator and the problems ive described are all unrelated?

Ive googled as much as I can find and for the life of me I cant find any similar faults?

Has anyone on here ever had anything similar?

I would start by disconnecting the battery for at least an hour and charging it "off line". After reconnecting reset windows and steering (lock to lock a few times) and see what issues you have then.
    Good luck.

    Hi,

from what i understand you shouldnt jumpstart most MB cars as it overloads the electrics and causes the faults you described....

im sure some more experienced members will be able to tell you whats happened..

Whilst I get that - the unfortunate truth is that I had absolutely no way of moving her to a power source, she was in park and had shifted on the parking brake the month I was away so unfortunately, the only way she was coming out was if she had power, knowing that she had to be moved that particular day due to the commencement of construction for my grandfathers new pool I had no choice!

Whilst I hate jumping any of my cars, I was stuck with no alternatives. However im fairly sure that the problems described have manifested themselves previously, im confident that the Jump hasnt done anything nasty :) Im off out for a battery charger to see if that will make any difference :)

Keep the suggestions coming though please chaps :)

There is an emergency release to get the lever out of park if the battery has failed / discharged. Check your handbook for future reference.:)
