In what respect are they tatty? It's difficult as they are hard anodised, polishing doesn't really have much effect on them.

I think they are made out of titanium. They are fixed in with rivets so do come apart. Just a long job, winter project !!

If you can strip it, you could get chrome vinyl wrap?

Spray the rest to match body colour etc?

Ah, the Ken Rockwell myth :D No, MB have confirmed they are aluminium, it is only the hard anodising colour that is titanium (perhaps a misunderstood translation of titanfarbig).

The difficulty is getting the old anodising stripped and an even finish to the underlying aluminium before reanodising.

The individual slats used to be available as separate parts ... not sure if that's still the case.

As mentioned above it's not easy to get the finish right second time around, customers have unreasonable expectations etc which means a lot of anodisers aren't willing to get involved with or guarantee the finish when redoing hard anodised parts, it's not worth the grief. For those that are, it usually means extra labour, which puts the price closer to that for new slats, especially if there's a chance it won't be 100% at the end.

Could try these people though: Alloy-trim

Just find a nicer used one. I think that you'll find it would be much cheaper than trying to fix yours. A new one should be about $650 US.

Last week, a complete grille with 7 bars has been sold 175£, no doubt a bargain. I would also try to find a nicer one but complete, you could have differences of colours between old and new bars changing only some parts.

Maybe I could separate the bars and get them chromed instead?
