R129 niggles

I have the following faults on my R129 1993 300SL. Anyone shed any light?

Windscreen wiper - doesnt come on in position 1 or , position 3 (fast) works.
Sometimes 1 & 2 works but not always.


Central locking - can lock it from the drivers door (key) but to unlock it I have to use the boot. The key feels too stiff when you try and turn it to unlock it.

Apart from that the car is great!

for the wiper see N10/2 relay issues. you will need to re solder it probably.

That'll probably be the relay. Mine generally needs cleaning and reseating on the connectors once every couple of years - it's hidden under the panel up by the passenger side scuttle. Not had to break the relay open yet.

I would suspect the switch (stalk) for the wiper problem?

Hopefully someone more familiar with the earlier cars will advise on the door locking - has the remote stopped working? It's quite common for the key locks to be a bit problematic as they're not normally used.

The keys should have a remote lock/unlock button on them. Do you have a handbook with the car?

no the key is just a flat type. no buttons on it. It's an 300SL - 24

The early ones werent remote. So you problem is most likely something mechanical jamming in the lock in the door.

Handbook shows two flat keys and one IR transmitter key with button. Can I buy one on ebay and reprogram? Is this a merc dealer job? Thanks

no they wont work... I doubt your 1993 has a flip out key... do you have flashing green and red LED's on the door handle or interior mirror?

IR central locking was standard on all UK R129s by 1996 (I have the price list). I don't know for sure about earlier cars, but I thought they had it too.

yes there is a flashing green and red bulb on the drivers and boot lock.

Ok, what is the best way to enable me to use an IR key. Where do I buy one/get one reprogrammed. Ebay or can anyone recommend somewhere in Birmingham that would do this for a reasonable price. Thanks

Not sure whether anyone other than a dealer will be able to do this (which would be big money). How long have you had the car - is it worth asking the seller if by any chance they still have the remote key?

Only a week, but did ask the seller and he only ever had the two flat keys. I might try a merc specialist. thanks
