R129 oil pressure?

Hi all

My 96 320SL is showing just over 3 on the oil pressure gauge irrespective of engine speed or how warm it is?

Oil level is fine, no untoward noises. Pulls like a train - but that pressure gauge doesn't move. (ok it goes to zero when I switch off).

New sender? Or something else?

Assuming that your SL has the in-line 6 M104 engine, here is a picture of my instruments after a run of 80 miles or so.



Here is a table showing recommended engine oil pressures.

Engine Oil Pressure M104 engine

(1 bar is 14.5 lbs / sq inch).


Engine speed in rpm Engine oil pressure in bar at oil temperature
of approx. 80 degrees C
600 – 750 1.3
1000 2.2
2000 4.8
3000 5.1
4000 5.3

If the engine runs sweet and is not overheating then I wouldn't worry too much but mention it at the next service.

If it goes straight to 3 when you switch the ignition on, then yes, it's faulty. Probably a short at the sensor.

Thanks - it does go straight to 3 - new sensor it is...
