R129 roof controller on an A124

So the connections of the roof controller for an R129 look the same as the A/W124 cabriolet... I'm referring to :

1298202426 compared to 1248204026

I've counted/compared pins and fitment of both units to be the same.

Has anybody actually tried to use an R129 controller though with success?

Original 124 controllers are impossible to find and these 129 controllers are reasonably attainable.

I would be very surprised if they were compatible, doesn't the 124 have manual front latches?

IMO they would have the same part number if they were interchangeable (this is quite common on M-B vehicles e.g. the windscreen washer reservoir on my W639 Vito has a W124 part no. on it).
