R129 SL AMG 18in staggered split rims offered in return for standard 16in 8-hole

One of the R129 SLs I am considering is currently fitted with the two-piece AMG 18in staggered wheel, apparently in excellent condition, tyre brand and condition as yet unknown. As a bit of an OEM stickler I would prefer to run the standard 8-hole 16in wheel.

If I do buy the car, are there any R129 owners here who might be interested in a swap. In return for a full set of 8-holes in good condition and with proper branded tyres with near full tread, I wouldn't be asking for any money for the AMG rims. If the tyres were significantly worn, I'd want something my way to fund new boots.

Thanks

Id certainly be up for a swap. If you do go ahead with the purchase, drop me an email to [email protected]

Thanks for the replies. The wheels I understand are original and identical to the ones fitted to your car, Bill. They are very nice wheels, but not to my taste. In that context, I'd rather not be paying extra for 18-inch boots.

In an ideal world, I would effect the swap with no additional outlay.

Are the 16-inch wheels as fitted to the R129 the same wheel / offset etc as those fitted to, say, a W124?

Thanks.

^ No:The ones fitted to 500sl is wider and is only fitted to 500e w124s.They`re 8j wide

That's fine ... no offence taken :D

If you swap for wheels with 'useable' tyres, make sure they date codes on them are OK. They may have been in storage, or on a car doing low annual mileage. As I'm sure you know, the rubber starts to degrade from date of manufacture - I wouldn't personally want to use tyres more than 5-6 years old on an SL.

As Bill mentioned... why not find another set of original 16" wheels and seel your 18's as you'd get far more money for them than you'd have to lay out for the 16's....

The 8j 8 hole 16s are not that cheap,so to find a set with good tyres all around i`ll cost

I have to agree - buy a set of 16s for a couple of hundred quid, have them refurbished to as new condition and new tyres fitted - you'll still get hundreds more for the 18" staggered split rims - weren't they something like £4000 a set new!

Will

Yup. 2 years ago I paid £1695 for mine (rims only, secondhand but in A1 condition).

A reasonable set with decent tyres could easily make £1200-£1500 ... you could buy a brand new set of 8-holes (as above) plus new tyres for a lot less than that.

Thanks for the info everyone. Should I buy the car in question, I will bear the value of wheels in mind. A bit of money my way and a swap is the most painless route. I do not enjoy the ebay experience, let's put it that way.

Having thought the wheels are genuine, I now suspect they may be reps. I'll know for sure on Tuesday when I view the car, but I am assuming that genuine items will have AMG marked on the spoke, which these appear not to...

As above - definately replicas and unfortunately only worth a few hundred quid max with tyres as opposed to genuine AMG split rims that are worth a considerable amount.

Yes, I thought so. Which is a bit of a bummer, if only because they'll be harder to move on. Well, and because they don't suggest money-no-object ownership history in quite the same way as the real things would.

Yup replicas. Offset at the rear doesn't look quite right either. They should be very slightly proud of the arches at the back, which is why dealer-fit ones always came with these natty little stick-on arch extensions

Even though they are reps , they still look really nice .

I personally would think again about swapping them for a set of boggo 16's
