Does anyone know whether it is possible to disable the passenger air bags on a 96 SL500?

Dont want to disable the whole system if it can be avoided.

If so could you let me have the info or where it might be found.

Many Thanks
Nigel

No.
From around '98 MB put in a system that disabled the airbag if an MB child's seat was used, via a transponder in the seat itself.
Noone will disconnect the airbag for you because of the risk that you may sell the car on without telling the purchaser that its been disabled.
If you have a young child then you can put a front-facing child seat in the back but you have to get the lap belt converted to a proper 3 point safety belt. If you need more details then ask as I had this done on my 129 last year.
It cost about £200 plus £100 for the seat itself.

Thanks Nick, thought as much but was worth the question just in case.

have had a quote from a place in Harrow for the 3 point belts for the rear which was as follows.

1). Static lap and diagonal seat belts.
Cost: 2 x seat belts = £ 50.00
4 x hours labour @ £47.50 = £190.00
Total = £240.00 plus VAT.

Reputable firm recomended by a MB dealer. They save cost on belts by using existing clunk click bit

They also can fit proper child restraint harness's for the older kids 4-11 years old but they are a bit more expensive.

Thanks again
Nigel

Sounds like the place I went - Quick Fit Bits (or something like that) in Queensbury. They are well known specialists at that sort of thing - got a mention in the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago.
They did a very good neat job on my SL. From memory it was £200 for the work (only one belt) plus £110 for the car seat.
