Hi,

I need some advice on replacing the speakers in my R129. I have recently upgraded the headunit to allow streaming but the speakers need upgrading.

I have gone to a couple of places who have recommended Focal speakers and a possible amp for a little more definition but I am having quote for £1600 and £900 for the job. Any recommendation on my options as I was hoping to spend no more than 500 for the upgrade?

I have one specialist telling me that they speakers are not standard size which is part of the reason why the costs are high and the other one claiming that they are standard sizes. They are both recommending Focal speakers.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

There are 2 issues to overcome here

1) The 129 has a 3 way component system. This instantly sets the bar for replacements at circa £200 upwards. That doesn't leave much from the budget for amp and fitting. You can potentially run from the head unit, equally you could lose the mids as 2-way comps are much cheaper, but you're not going to get the best out of the system.
2) The speakers themselves are a standard size, but the mid and woofer are fitted into a specific mounting pod in the door. This means you either have to make something to replace it, or try and bodge the new speakers into the existing mounting.

I fitted the Focal 165 AS which is a two way in my S203 and very happy. They did need the crossover setting to the lowest of the 3 switch positions to rein in the treble for me and others have said they can be a bit harsh.
Set as I mentioned though they are great.

There is a 3 way which is around £180 - 165 AS3.
I would recommend either making or buying some MDF adapters as the plastic ones are generally rubbish.

Have you looked here?

Thank you for this link and advice..
