R129 ~ very slow windscreen wiper

The windscreen wiper of my SL has begun working incredibly slowly. Irrespective of what speed you set the stalk to, the wiper takes apx 30secs to complete a single wipe action.

Any ideas on what's to blame, or advice on what I can check? Or am I best to assume that it's the wiper motor? If so, is replacement straight forward or a complete 'mare?
