Just seen this today, not sure for other gas but coming out at £29.95 for an R134A recharge.

Enter code ‘Kwik9’ at checkout. Think the code may only be valid for today but I was able to book any date up til the end of January, so have booked a couple of mine in for the new year :thumb:

No affiliation with Kwik-Fit, but the offer said ‘20% off’ - seems to go through with £20 off though.

Decent price anyway, I’ve not seen better for a long time

I'm surprised that they are offering "service" I was talking to my local Kwikfit manager recently and he told me they only do "recharge" anything else they won't do, I was wanting them to do a condenser replacement as it had disintegrated on my Panda, I ended up getting them to discharge it, and then after I changed the condenser from ecp£26, recharge it for me, worked out a very cheap repair.

I don’t think many of these large chains do much in the way of repairs.

When they say recharge, that’s it. The only thing many of them also offer is an anti-bacterial clean or similar - pretty much like drawing in a can of dettol aerosol through the intake to the fan to clean bugs on the evaporator.

I use air con all year round, and have never had issues with bad smells etc. Guess it depends on the individual and/or vehicle perhaps.

For repairs though, obviously a proper specialist garage would be your best bet. I’ve a new pair of condensers to fit on the 911 so will fit those myself and then take it to KF for vacuum, pressure test and recharge. The re-charge process is pretty straightforward to be fair.

Does the Kwikfit recharge include a leak check as it's illegal to regas an a/c system if it hasn't been leak checked or knowingly has a leak

Pretty much everyone uses very similar semi-automated equipment these days, and yes the leak check is performed under vacuum before recharging with refrigerant.

In simple terms - these machines are just connected up with hoses to the high and low side valves, the tech enters the year/make and model and the machine does the rest.

Not particularly complex work here, but £29.95 for the gas and use of the machine was a decent deal. It’s finished now, but hopefully at least one other member has benefited from this offer :thumb:

Yep, had the A Class done this morning and it was exactly as Will described it: they connect it up and the machine goes through the process, producing a printed report at the end. In my case the air con was working fine when it went in, albeit a little less powerfully than when it was new, so I wasn't expecting any repair work to be needed. Apparently the gas was down to about 450g rather than the 770g it should be, and no oil came out with it so it was well worth doing to get both of those back to normal levels.

The E Class is going in next Sunday for the same treatment, for what will hopefully be a similarly painless experience.

Thanks again Will: you've saved me a total of £40. Merry Christmas!

The machine will pull a vacuum and you can check if the vacuum holds as part of the process before refilling. If they suck out less than they put in, there's a leak. Freon is not a consumable like a fuel. It has to leak if the system is under charged.

No pressurised air con system is 100.0% gas tight, even when not faulty. A tiny amount will inevitably be lost over time. That’s normal for any pressurised system with several connections/joints, seals and moving parts exposed to extremes of temperature, vibration, weather etc. Unlike a domestic fridge for example that sits static in one place in a dry room, with no airflow and just maintaining a set temperature with an insulated door. Automotive air con systems get worked pretty hard by comparison.

If it’s losing gas to the point of not functioning at all over a relatively short period (say less than a year or two) then you’ve obviously got a leak that needs addressing. But if you want to check the pressure and have it recharged to full capacity it’s not bad practice to do so every few years.

A crude comparison, but you check and inflate your tyre pressures now and again - even though they are sealed. If they go flat in a short period of time then you clearly have a puncture (leak). But it’s expected that a tiny amount of pressure is lost over time.

For less than £30, I don’t really see much downside in this :thumb:

BTW, the offer is back on for today - new code:

‘Kwik19’ - still taking £20 off so £29.95 all in
