R172 SLK 250 Cdi Glass Roof Query

Hello there.
Just picked up a 2015 SLK 250Cdi AMG for the missus.
The car has a glass roof but inside the car there is a solid plastic panel.
I'm aware thar Mercedes do a replacement panel with an aperture (£200!) and I thought it would be a simple swap, but after (easily) removing the interior panel the glass is opaque from inside the car.
Seems to have some sort of hard coating on.
Is this removable?
If not, what's the point of the glass roof?
Any help or advice appreciated

Your car is probably equipped with the Mercedes-Benz Sky Control.

Earlier versions you could remove the headliner and replace the trim, giving you the tinted roof at less cost than specifying it.
Mercedes got wise to this and bonded an opaque coating to the roof to prevent it.
So no, it can’t be removed. Mercedes spent money to ensure you got less.

Check to see if you have option 91U roof interior trim, black foil.

I've ran the numbers through vindecoderz.com and the car does indeed have option 91U.
I guess my only option now would be a used glass panel off flea-Bay

Just checked, no joy - most likely going to be North of £1000 too - just have to live with it as is.

I have the same thing with my new (to me) 2014 r172 250cdi, is there an update’ hack, mod, YouTube video?
