Hi All,
first post here. Due to a change in circumstances as a result of a new job, early in July I bought a 2008 R230 SL500 'Sport Edition' which appears to be some kind of run-out model before the big MY09 facelift. I took a risk and bought a high mileage, relatively cheap car that I know has had some bodywork in the past, but with good service history and only 2 owners.
So far, so good on the whole. Most impacting issue to date is a mild vibration at speed. Had the front wheels balanced and was told one of them is slightly buckled.
I intend to get the car properly checked out by a specialist while I'm in the 3 month warranty period.
I'm sure I'll have a number of questions in the coming weeks and months that I hope to get some advice on, and I look forward to sharing my ownership experience, but for now my question concerns wheels. I'd like to get a cheap set of alloys to put winter tyres on. My car is on 19" wheels, and I know that some R230s run 17". What I'm not sure about is whether the discs and calipers on my car are the same size as on cars that run 17" wheels, and would therefore allow me to fit 17s as winters. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of clearance between the disc/caliper and the 19" wheel on my car. And on this one with 17s (2004 SL500), I think the disc looks smaller than on mine (similar looking amount of air between disc and wheel, and of course the wheel is smaller):
Mine:
Should I just go for 18s, which I'm sure would fit (can't believe the discs on my car would only allow a 19" wheel)?
Cheers
Ian
