well, i have never damaged a merc fitting a screen , and yes, i personally take great pride in the job i do, its a shame that its not appreciated ,and that all that is appreciated is when 1 mistake out of maybe 30 or 40 fitments.is brought to peoples attention, perhaps if these people tried to fit their own screens, then they would see how difficult a job it really is.!!!! :(

I had a crack in my drivers view so thought i should get it done...

Chose autoglass .. after much negotiation I was told that I couldnt have a mb glass screen (ie with the logo)..

They turned up - excellent fit and it did have the logo!!

It did also have the wrong tint (blue not green) - the avantgarde one not the classic one - but i said i didnt mind and you really cant tell the difference.
A good job - I was very nervous to begin with but they did quite well in the end!

Your certainly a lot more tolerant than me! I don't know if I would accept the wrong colour glass on a brand new car!

Cheers, :)

You have hit the nail on the head I think :) There are _SOME_ people that have pride in their craft but not that many any more. I agree that we all have off days as well. But If I have an off day I put my hand up and admit that, my work is not up to scratch and correct the issue. Because I would rather work a day for free than have a customer think that the shoddy work that I turned out on the day was the best that I could do... I find that it pays of in spades because people comeback, and contract roll on rather than end :) The problem comes when a craftsman has an off day and rather than admit the problem tries to pass the work off as OK. (Not suggesting for one moment that you would do this. )
This gives you ALL the bad name and results in the kind of thread we see here :)

Happy New Year to you all :D

perhaps if i set up a workshop installing merc glass, i may be able to dispeal some of this bad feeling that is aimed at my trade?what do u think guys?would u use an independant company specialising in the fitment of glass to merc cars??? let me know !!

I was just wondering, how about comming to a GTG and doing a screen change then everyone will know what is involved. I have changed screens on Opels and Fords (old style) and can vouch that it is an art, although the person who showed me had been doing it for years. I broke at least three screens in one day just learning ( S.H.A.P.E. paid for them, big budget)

well what is gtg ???,i have been a windscreen fitter since 1985 so i have the experience . :D

GetToGether. An club meet basically.

Who do you work for GlassFitter? One of the large chains, RAC, Autowindscreens etc or an independant?

The issue is, the most of for simplicity have to go with the company our insurance company dictates to get the no quibble £50 excess only job.

Your skills aside not being questioned, do you really believe every other fitter that works for these large outfits are even competant, let alone to your standards or do you agree there is a vast scale of difference, all down to pot luck of who you get on the day for the customer?

i agree with you to a point that it depneds on pot luck who u get on the day, be it a trainee or an experienced guy,my point is that the experienced guys are getting less and less ,so your chances of getting a "baboon" i mean trainee are greater, what i am saying is it goes back to that old addage , if you pay peanuts then u get monkeys, unfortunately the big companies put profit before the experience of staff, consiquently they pay a rediculously low wage ,so only trainees or as spike put it "baboons" will work for them,i no longer work for any of the big chains or independants,i have my own business,www.premier-autotints.com take a look , and you will see the quaility of my workmanship, all the vehicles that we tint have had every piece of glass removed from them ,then the glass is repolished ,recleaned and then the tinting flim applied, then the glass is placed in an oven for 30 mins to allow the film to bake on giving a factory finish, look in the gallery of my website, thats where you will find all of our pics of cars we have done, plus our magazine work we have done namely maxpower and redline.but i still do windscreens for people that want them doing although my main job is now is window tinting. :) :D

All the screens are tinted but they may have fitted green not blue.

Go back to Autowindscreens and have it checked and if necessary replaced by them again. If still not satisfied notify your insurance company and insist on a MB screen.

This is easy phone RAC up and tell them that the screen that was ordered was the wrong colour, and you are not satisfied. It would help if you can see that the screen does not match the passenger window... I would also kick up a fuss that your car is a mercedes and its waranty requires that only branded parts are used... They will winge that they only buy OEM tell them that you will not accept an OEM screen and refere it back to the insurance company, and the company should relent and agree a proper screen...

when I had the screen done on my bmw, the insurance allowed me to have it done through one of their authorised bodyshops, which was infact the local BMW dealer, so i got an original screen, perfect fit, right colour, first time!

you could try asking ur insurance if they will just let you book it in with a bodyshop, who do change screens anyway??

i was lucky i suppose when i got my windscreen done on the CLK.... RAC Windscreens did it but apparently they are where Western MB dealer goes too (just about a mile down the road), so i suppose they are used to Mercs...

did a good job and i was pleased.... took about a week to get the screen tho as the 1st one arrived cracked so they had to re-order....

look what happend to my windscreen. see there is no more merc logo.
