Hi,

Just purchased a C-Class coupe cgi 1.8L turbo, looking at a Racechip module for more power, having googled this engine it appears that the Mercs are badged 180, 200, and 250 gci petrol, it also appears that all three versions use the same 1.8L w204 engine in different states of tune prior to 2012, namely 156bhp. 184bhp and 203bhp or thereabouts. If that is the case it would be absolutely safe in my view to remap or Racechip the 156bhp 180 to 203bhp or above.

Anyone used racechip, are they OK.

Rob.

What no interest in more bang for your buck, BMW forums rave about this German tuning box.

I would think a remap would be better.
Assuming only electronic differences (not mechanical) then 200bhp should be easy and safe.

I personaly would not touch the Race Chip or any other tuning box and would go for the remap option unless it was i.e Brabus D6S module which is very advanced and integrates into the canbus system of the vehicle.

All a tuning box is doing is fooling ths ECU with it values to dump more fuel and depending on the type of tuning box may possssibly boost the turbo pressure. Eventualy the ECU will learn that it is being fooled hence you will not always get consistent increase in power performance delivery opposed to a high quality remap. Some tuning boxes are crude and dump excessive fuel with differennt manual settings for power increase which results in engine damage.

The ecu is locked it appears that my car cannot be remapped, Racechip links between the fuel pressure rail sensor, this is the only sensor involved, it would seem to me that the rail pressure sensor must be one of the first sensors the ecu sees ,ie the first thing a driver does is to put his/hers foot on the accelerator, the the ecu sees that data and responds according to it`s map. If the fuel pressure reading is then altered by the racechip and nothing else the ecu will respond according to it`s own map I believe.

If you cannot remap then out of the power modules Race Chip is competively priced. Also, take a look at the Mosselmann Inteligent Control module which connects to fuel rail pressure and crank shaft sensor and is flased with software for your specific engine.

Steinbauer do a module to which connects to each injector and sends pulse signals to keep each injector open longer hence fuel pressure is not increased, sensor connects to EGT and reference wire is soldered on throttle postion sensor. Howver, Steinbauer are over priced at approx £800 and module is flashed with software specific for your vehicle. Down side to keeping injectors open longer is combustion temp will increase but there is a safety overide with the EGT connection as when gets too hot power is decreased.

Just remap it ecu is not locked but might be encrypted. Seen a few mapped versions of this car so it can be done.
