A plea for help!

The rad in my '96 W124 E200 has handed in it's notice and my garage has so far has two different rads delivered, neither of which fitted. Is the rad on such a late '124 so very different? Where (except MB) can I get one?

Any thoughts?

Thanks guys

The later ones look just like the early ones, but have an extra smaller outlet?

Nissans make them so it should not be too hard to get one.

Unless your car has been retro fitted with air con at some point?

No - it has factory fitted aircon. Can you recommend a supplier?

Thanks

MY guess is that the garage has ordered a radiator for the earlier w124 2 litre 102 engined car. This was the old single cam engined car whereas at car dated 1994 you will have the twin cam 111 engine. Remember to specify whether its an automatic gearbox or not. As Nick says Nissens [Danish make] should be readily available- they are usually available from Eurocarparts but they don't seem to be in stock at the moment.

Failing that , a radiator specialist like Serck could probably recondition your original radiator .

Unless rather than factory AC it's a Davia kit, in which case the radiator could be am odd one.

As far as can be seen the car is as it left the factory (well OK, a bit scruffier...).

The rad which was in the car is about 14x14inches and the problem seems to be the pipe connecting it to the gearbox. At the rad end this has a 'banjo' fixing which doesn't fit the replacement rads which have been sent.

I now seem to have 2 options:
1. Get the old rad an take it to a breakers to try and find a matching part
2. Get a custom pipe made up to fit a new rad

Apparently getting the old rad reconditioned isn't an option. Given that this is an everyday part for what is let's face it a pretty mundane car I'm astonished at the bother this is causing.

I'll keep you all posted.

Air con rads are rectangular, so if your rad is square it could be a non air con rad (nice and cheap) hinting that the aircon is an retrofit (which loads of dealers did).

Can you get a photo of the rad and post it up?

I'll be collecting the rad on Tuesday so I'll try to get some pics up then.

How can I tell if the aircon is non-original?

Thanks for all the help so far.

The fans tend to be made by Spal rather than anyone German and the condensor will not have an MB part number on it.

The plot thickens. That's a no on the factory aircon then. So I need one from a car without aircon ideally. God it's complicated!

Which is good news, as non aircon rads are quite a bit cheaper, as they're basically just a 190E rad with an extra outlet - or blocked off outlet, one of the two.

go online to a company called nissens and register on there you'll be able to see how many types of rad there is for that model and what they fit and the differences i usually buy all my rads from Norther radiators LTD in leeds bradford or huddersfield if your wanting used i suggest either boss parts in leeds or dronsfields in oldham? i also have a a full spax kit for a 124 open to offers its brand new in box

Not sure Nick - as mentioned I don't have the rad at present. Good site though - I think it may be worth a trip to York at some point anyway! I', embarassed to admit that apart from the dents in the doors, the car in the scrapyard looks tidier than mine - not even rust on the front wings!

There is a yard in Doncaster (ie half the distance) which has a couple of 124s in at the moment (MotorHog - used car parts and secondhand car spares) so I might try them first.

Thanks again
