Apparently the story I heard was.....
back in the 70's, ITV used to run an informal inhouse Christmas competition to see who could dig up the funniest outtake (in the days before It'll be alright on the night and similar programmes), the production team for Rainbow decided they wanted to win so created that clip, it was never aired, just created for the amusement of others at ITV.

I can confirm that rumour.
A friend used to work for the BBC in Manchester and they and Granada TV used to make these 'outtake' videos and then swap them. There is no way these versions could have been shown on TV. Far too blue. We used to wait all year for the trip over to his house around Christmas time to watch the tapes.
