w203 320 CDI
Hi everyone,

This weekend I'm planning on changing the air filter on my W203 320CDI and it looks like a fiddly job with quite a few parts having to be taken out to gain access.

Is there a way to raise the bonnet further so I don't keep hitting my head on the grill? I see there are buttons on the gas struts that hold the bonnet up, but I am unsure if this is how to raise the bonnet further?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Stew :thumb:

If it is like mine you press in the red button on the right hand gas strut and then push the bonnet up until it locks in the fully raised position,

To lower, lift the bonnet up slightly and press the button at the top of the strut in before lowering.

Thats brilliant - thanks for the quick reply! I will go out and have a look for the red button just now. Stew

They may have changed the colour but the button appears when you open the bonnet to the first stage.:thumb:

I have just been to have a look and I do see the red button on the outside of the right hand strut. However the button seems to be pushed in all the way (I cannot fit my finger in to push the button). Is it supposed to be pressed in by a screwdriver or should the button not be pressed in this far? I tried pushing it with my little finger but couldnt get the bonnet to budge

Just been out to check, when my bonnet is open to the first position the red button is out, pressing it in releases the bonnet to open further.

Ahh ok, for some reason my button seems to stay in all the time. Maybe i just need to give it a bit of a push as maybe its not fully up in the first position. Thanks for your help. I will go and have a wee fight with it and see if i can get the button to pop back out! Thanks again!

I got it to open. My button is quite a bit in but it turns out I was pushing it in, I just wasn't lifting the bonnet with enough force. I was being far too gentle with it. Many thanks DSM10000 for your help!

Just for clarity, on mine the button is out when the bonnet is in the first position, pressing it in and raising the bonnet lets the strut move further until the button pops out to lock the strut.:thumb:

Glad you sorted it!

Like most things it is easy when you know how:)
