Worth watching as Raj tries to rescue an old lemon. There is a bit of blue smoke from start, maybe the valve stem seal needs replacing?

Nice enough example but a few things I noticed:

Mileage isn’t genuine, check the MOT history. Crack in the RH trim panel in the dash is where the instrument cluster has been out ;)

Regarding the smoke, would need diagnosing. I suspect the exhaust valve guides have worn, and the engine would probably benefit from a top end overhaul. The bottom ends of these engines are pretty durable.

Guy seems keen enough, but clearly doesn’t know a lot about these cars which is a shame. Sad to see he’s planning on taking a pretty original looking car and modifying it with non original suspension/wheels/exhaust etc.

To me I’d do a compression and leakdown test and probably have the head off to overhaul it properly. New timing chain, new engine mounts (you can see they’ve gone with the engine running and the exhaust moving around!), bonnet insulation pad, repair the bolster and lap timer, trim panel on the dash etc, sort the wobbly aerial out, clean and wax everything underneath and get it detailed.

But I guess we’re all different! :thumb:

^^^X2 I wonder whether the bonnet insulation pads are still available from MB? Bodywork and sills seems to be in good order which is a positive 🙂

The rear jacking points have had it. They don’t look too bad on the outer sill but it will definitely be one of those repairs that gets more involved once you start. They fill with water and rot from the inside out

Not sure on the bonnet pads, there’s various types. Were available from MB a few years back though. I know you can buy aftermarket ones anyway so that’s always an option too.

I actually pass by where this guy is based quite regularly, maybe I should pop in and offer some advice :)

I have a spare VDO stopwatch and new LCD screen, that might help him out too :thumb:

Nice guy he is. I think he will really appreciate the spare parts and advice. I have attended a few meets, the last one was Benz with Friends which was a good turn out. The other club members turned up too.

Give my regards to Raj, they'll know my car when you mention 👍🙂

I’ll try and make time to get in touch. I can also put him in touch with some useful contacts for parts and advice too if he needs it :thumb:

Not a 190e but I got a new bonnet pad for my W124 from Mercedes Newcastle on ebay. £96 inc. delivery.

I’m sure I remember back in the day some of the 190 boys fitting trimmed down 124 pads as they’re better quality (they used to make a denser material type rather than the spongey foam material on W201s).

I’ve had some W124s and the pads seemed okay even on older examples.

Tip - sort the engine mounts out before you fit a new pad on a 16v 190E, the airbox will hit and damage the pad otherwise as the engine is revved! ;)

Since he was dealing with the exhaust it's a pity he didn't mention the complex free flow tubular exhaust manifold- getting rare as hens teeth now in RHD guise [left-hand drive manifold is much simpler iirc as it doesn't have to deal with the steering column/box assembly.
