Ok...on the way home tonight, the fuel light comes on - I look at how much range I have and it's 58 miles (I'm 4 miles from home) I take a short cut up a steep(ish) cobbled hill (noticing range drop to 14 miles due to driving up a hill). I get home safely, then have to pop out somewhere (via fuel station). The car won't start! - I try a couple more times....it starts! I get 10 metres, and it stops!

I call the AA, who show up promptly. I tell the guy what happened, and he suggests maybe I'm out of fuel - he puts some diesel in, and after a few cranks and some easy start, I'm up and running. I leave the car ticking over whilst I do the paperwork, then I go to fuel up. On the way to the petrol station I notice the car seems to be in limp mode - wont go over 2500 revs, and not much acceleration. once I fuelled up the car is back normal!!

Is it normal to enter limp mode when running out of fuel?

PS I felt such a pillock!!! (Never run out of fuel before!)

AND..... on another note, my kickdown doesn't seem to be kicking down - I get a fault flashing up saying to visit workshop - any ideas? Apart from kickdown, gears are working perfectly - plenty of acceleration etc.

I doubt a lack of fuel causing your issue. I think it's more of a hot start problem.

Get it checked on a star and have a leak off check done too.

Sometimes a poor hot start can be caused by an injector leaking off too much.
