Hi All,

I am a dyed in the wool Land Rover fan, and have been driving Range Rovers exclusively for the past 15 years. I've had all the variants and at the moment I'm in a beautifully high spec'd L405 (current shape) Vogue SE 4.4SDV8. It's a stunning car.

My favourite ones have always been the petrol Supercharged versions but they NEVER sound like an AMG. I have a friend who's had 2 C63s and the noise is awesome. It's an itch I feel I need to scratch.

I've never owned an MB, nor an AMG, so in a nutshell, am I being daft thinking of moving to a GLE? They simply don't have the luxury of the RR, or the toys and I don't think people give them a second look whereas the RR is a head turner (but no lovely V8 soundtrack).

Are AMG's reliable? Is it a sin to buy one out of warranty? There seem to be so many AMG's for sale with low miles on them even after 4 or 5 yrs, it makes me suspicious that they are as precious as my old M cars used to be.

Any buying advice is welcome, I know nothing about them, what the pitfalls are, common problem areas etc.

I have a billion questions but I will keep it short for now.

MB will not be as luxurious as FFRR. Me, I'd look at aftermarket exhausts for a supercharged one instead.

Go for a test drive and see if you like them. Check out the G63 as well if budget allows.

What about the Range Rover sport SVR ? That sounds pretty amazing.
Wouldnt the G wagon be more on par with a Range Rover rather than a GLE?

Does the RRS SVR not tickle your fancy? They sound brutal at full chat.

Exhaust swap the way to go, I had an L433 full Project Khan black label with V8 and modified exhaust, that seemed loud on full acceleration.

The SVR is the dream I guess from a Land Rover stable point of view, but they are still £60k for the earliest models.

The AMGs seem more affordable but I don’t know enough about their reliability, running costs etc to know if it’s worth the leap.

I’ve looked at aftermarket exhausts too and you’re knocking on for £5k just for that and you don’t know what it’s going to sound like until it’s done.

There is a newish SVR that lives up the street from me, sounds fantastic and goes like stink - however the guy drives it like a complete *****.

Yep and a lot of the SH cars have had so many owners you just know it’s guys like that, thrashing them and then moving them on, probably without proper servicing.

It’s funny that no one has yet said “He’ll yeah, get an AMG!”
I’m sure you’ll be impressed with the GLE/GLS 63, no doubt about it they don’t half shift and sound great, it’s just whether you’re willing to sacrifice the higher status of a FFRR for one.

If an SVR is out of budget, what *is* your budget?

What about a bespoke exhaust - Imran at Torqueflow / MSL should be able to sort the exhaust on a RR for under £1k. They do a lot of Merc work but do all makes as well.

Do bear in mind that the sound you’ve loved on the C63 won’t be the same as the sound on a GLE63, which will be quieter.

They are 2 totally different cars the rr is more luxurios with lots of gadets, but a well spec'd gle 63s is a good place to be. Premium pack will give you heated /cooled massaging seats soft close doors ,keyless entry, harmon kardon sound & a couple of other things. Drive assistance pack will give you blind spot warning in the wing mirrors, also auto driving once set, Amg drivers pack will give you a louder exhaust note and a deresticted top speed of 175mph, you can also get rear entertinment tv in the front. b&o sound was an expensive option at £3495 but i really like it. night pack gives you black alloys and black trim around the windows and wing mirrors &also black exhaust tips &black trim around the bottom of the front?rear bumper. They are also to different drives the rr more wafty like a big ship and the gle is just a beast on the road from the way it grips to the sound everything about it really is amazing, you should take one for a test drive as for reliability they seem to be faultless.hope that helps

If you have any more questions or just someone to have a chat with regarding amg's give Bally a call at Zenith performance they are amg specialist who specialize in amg.

Love to hear whether you made a decision?

I'm about to change my c63 for GLE63. I've looked at Range Rovers as well, but can't be convinced. I agree that a GLE doesn't usually get much of a second look (even the 63s), but completely disagree that a Range Rover is any sort of head turner. They are hyper common around these parts - I reckon out of the premium SUVs I see every day (GLE, X5, Q7 etc.) the vast, vast majority are Rangies.

If you're after toys and plush interior, I'd probably agree that a RR is a better bet. But if you want to turn heads, I'd get an AMG.

You're definitely right that there seems to be a massive drop off in price after the MB warranty expires...

I’ve always thought part of the attraction of a Range Rover is it’s continuation - the German SUVs you mention seem to change from year to year - next year is it’s 50th year and it always has been and always will be a British icon.

The other issue is the German 4x4’s all have a “brother” in the car segment that sells for £30-40k - E-Class & GLE for example - whereas the FFRR doesn’t, this helps the RR price perception. Using VAG as an example is even worse; Touareg to Bentayga anyone?

AMG Low Mileage is probably down to its appetite for Super Unleaded...:p

As for reliability - all the independent warranty companies say RR is near to bottom of reliability??

What would you like to know? To answer the questions in your first post:

Yes they are reliable. The have air suspension which will eventually need replacement, and it won’t be cheap, but that’s probably not going to be a concern until the car is 10 years or more, and will be true for a Range Rover too.

Personally I would prefer to drive a GLE63 outside of warranty than a Range Rover, but perhaps that’s because I’m more familiar with them.

Mercedes (along with other prestige car makers) also suffers with this; once you scratch the surface the gauge is normally “cost” of repairs - an alternator on a Kia Cee’d is a little less than an S500 for example.

I’ve just gone the other way. I’ve always been a V8 owner and usually AMG but had to scratch the itch of a life long desire to own a FFRR which I swapped for my GLE 63S PP which I had from new.

As you’d expect, they’re chalk and cheese but I had 34,000 trouble free miles and never feared of it letting me down. All cars fail at some point & they’ll be expensive to fix but what I’ve heard of JLR though is that there are too many regular faults.

AMG Build quality is good and with the leather dash, it does feel like a more luxurious cabin than other MB’s. The real difference with the interior spec is the seats - GLE are sports seats and FFRR are like armchairs.

As for driving experience, the AMG is off the charts quick for a car that size and it’s pretty rare that there’s anything quicker on the road. Brake fade is quite bad if your doing alpine roads, but other than that it feels like it handles as well as smaller sports car in the bends. With the 4WD, the traction in the wet for such a powerful car is brilliant. I’m comfort mode it can cruise comfortably but will never feel as luxurious as the FFRR.

The only major maintenance issue was that it chewed through rear brake pads - more than the fronts which was odd. I think they under sized the rear brakes for the power/weight of the car.

The missus is currently loving the FFRR and the V8 candle is still burning with a used AMG GTS.

Only piece of advice is to buy used from MB - I did so with the GTS and I don’t have to worry about it for 2 years.
